Scott Frost doesn’t have the luxury of easing into this one. UCF just watched Malachi Lawrence and Nyjalik Kelly move on to the NFL, and now the Knights need a new pair to keep the pass rush humming.
That’s the job in front of Isaiah Nixon and a healthy Sincere Edwards. Frost pointed to the two as the players who handled the “Robin role” behind Lawrence and Kelly, and now the spotlight shifts. The question is whether they can turn those supporting reps into full-time production.
The departing duo left a real mark. Lawrence and Kelly combined for 74 tackles, 50 solo stops and seven sacks last season, and they were central to UCF’s lone Defensive Line of the Week honor in October against West Virginia.
In that game, the Knights got to the quarterback eight times, with Lawrence and Kelly responsible for three of those sacks. Both also collected postseason recognition, with Lawrence landing on the All-Big 12 First Team and Kelly earning All-Big 12 Honorable Mention.
Their exits also came with NFL validation. Lawrence was selected 23rd overall by the Dallas Cowboys, making him the highest-drafted defensive player in program history. Kelly went undrafted but signed with the Green Bay Packers and impressed over the summer, eventually landing a contract worth over $250,000.
Now it’s on the next wave.
Nixon looks ready for the leap after playing in 11 games last season. He finished with a career-high 24 tackles and recorded his only sack of the year in UCF’s final home game against Oklahoma State.
His role has grown steadily, too, with his snap count climbing every season. Last year, he played a career-best 311 snaps, which was 22 more than in 2024.
“I've been waiting for this moment my whole life, to be honest with you," Nixon told reporters on April 21. "These past three years being behind Malachi, Nyjalik, this gives me an opportunity to like soak all this in and just go out there and just play hard my last year."
Edwards’ path is a little different. He’s trying to get back on track after a season-ending Lisfranc fracture before the West Virginia game stopped what had been a strong start.
The former Pittsburgh Panther had 17 tackles and three sacks as a freshman, then was on pace to top those numbers after six games at UCF. He finished last season with 11 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
And UCF’s EDGE room doesn’t stop there. Frost also mentioned returner Aymeric Koumba along with transfers Bruno Dall, LA Jesse Harrold and Ken Talley as part of the mix.

A familiar face may be on the way back into UCFs linebacker room after a U.S. District Court judge granted a preliminary injunction that opens the door for a fifth year of eligibility for Class of 2022 athletes. Cole Kozlowski was at preseason practice and is in the process of rejoining the team, giving the Knights a potential boost in experience as they continue sorting out the depth chart under Scott Frost.
There is still some fine print to work through, though, because Kozlowskis status could shift again if future court rulings change the eligibility picture. Frost has already signaled that he is open to the return, but he also stressed that the fit has to be right within the programs culture, which leaves Kozlowski with one final hurdle before anything feels settled. Dylan Wades rise has become one of the most important developments for UCFs offense heading into 2026. The Orlando native, who transferred in from Maryland, put together a record-setting 2025 season for the Knights and has already piled up preseason recognition before a new snap is even taken, landing on multiple watch lists and honors as the summer turns toward camp.
The latest nod may be the one that best captures how far his profile has climbed. Wade was named to the 2026 John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List, putting him in line with the nations top tight ends and underscoring just how central he has become to what UCF wants to do on offense.
