UCF Faces A Brutal Test To Keep Its Offense Alive Against Oklahoma State

UCF faces a tough matchup against Oklahoma State with a weakened roster, as critical players on both the offensive line and defense are missing.

UCF’s injury report is still crowded heading into its ranked matchup with No. 18 Oklahoma State, and the Knights are trying to piece things together while leaning on backup quarterback Keyone Jenkins.

The biggest absence remains starting quarterback Alonza Barnett III, who is still sidelined. Wide receiver Caleb Rollerson and linebacker Lewis Carter are also out, leaving UCF thin at multiple spots as it prepares for a tough test.

Jenkins is a key part of the offense’s outlook, and the report offered some encouragement there: he was listed as probable. That matters for a unit that has looked far steadier with him in the lineup over the last two weeks. When Jenkins briefly got hurt against Houston, the offense stalled, and against Oklahoma State’s prolific passing attack, UCF will need him to protect the football and keep drives alive.

There could also be help on the way at receiver. Duane "Speedy" Thomas Jr. was upgraded to questionable on Thursday, and his potential return would give a struggling wideout group a needed boost. UCF’s quarterbacks have spread the ball around, but the Knights remain near the bottom of the Power 4 in receiving production.

Tight end Dylan Wade is another name to watch. The senior has only eight catches for 53 yards after last year’s historic campaign, but he is listed as probable and should be available, along with redshirt freshman tight end Caden Piening.

The most significant blow on offense may be up front. Freshman center Jacob Maiava is on the report after suffering a soft tissue injury in his groin against Houston.

Maiava had quickly emerged as a force and was anchoring UCF’s run game, so his loss is a major one. With him out, offensive guard Connor Meadows moves back into the center spot.

That setback lands at a bad time for a line that had started to look improved. Still, Oklahoma State has shown vulnerability against the run, ranking near the bottom of the Big 12 in opponent rushing yards per game at 158.8. That sets up a clear approach for UCF: run the ball early, help Jenkins settle in, and try to keep him protected throughout the night.

UCF Heads Into A Trickier Oklahoma State Test Than Fans Realize

The trip to Stillwater looks a lot more complicated than the record might suggest for UCF, because Oklahoma State is no longer the same team that bottomed out a year ago. Under new coach Eric Morris, the Cowboys have been rebuilt in a more organized, more disciplined way, and the early returns have been enough to make them look like a far sturdier Big 12 test than the average October road game.

What has made the turnaround work is a defense that can punish mistakes and an offense that is still trying to iron out some of the finer points. Quarterback turnovers remain a concern, third-down production has been uneven, and the red zone has been a persistent issue, all of which gives UCF a chance to keep the game tight if it handles the ball cleanly. Even so, Matthew Postins read on the matchup is clear enough: this is not a soft landing spot for a team trying to keep its conference footing steady. [Read more 🡒]

Arizona State Sits In A Stretch That Could Define Colorados Bowl Push

Arizona States place on Colorados remaining schedule is part of what makes this stretch so unforgiving for the Buffaloes. At 2-3 heading into a bye, Colorado is trying to map out a path to bowl eligibility, and the calendar leaves little margin for error with UCF, Kansas State, Cincinnati, Houston and Oklahoma State still ahead, along with the Sun Devils and three ranked opponents lurking in the mix.

The next few weeks will tell the story of whether Colorado can steady both sides of the ball against a run of opponents that bring different problems, from home-field tests to difficult matchups against more complete teams. Arizona State is one of the games that helps define the rest of the season, because the Buffaloes are already deep enough into a tough slate that every remaining Saturday starts to feel like a referendum on whether the bowl push is still realistic. Kansas Needs This Week 6 Test To Show Real Big 12 Progress

Week 6 in the Big 12 arrives with the kind of slate that can start sorting out the middle of the league, and Central Florida finds itself right in the mix as the conference race takes another step toward clarity. The schedule is loaded with matchups that matter, from Iowa State at BYU to Arizona at West Virginia, Houston at Kansas State and Kansas at Utah, with every result carrying some weight for how the standings begin to take shape.

UCFs trip fits that same mold, because it puts the Knights in a game that should reveal more about where they stand as the Big 12 calendar keeps tightening. With several teams already trying to separate from the pack, this is the sort of week when a road test can say as much about progress as the standings do, and the Knights will be watching closely even as the wider conference picture keeps shifting around them.
