The UCF defense has already put together one of the strongest early résumés in the Big 12, but after last Saturday’s win over Pittsburgh, the Knights are zeroing in on the details that slipped through.
The headline number was impressive enough: Pittsburgh managed just 12 points. UCF also kept the Panthers in uncomfortable territory for much of the day, routinely forcing long-yardage situations by squeezing out the first two downs.
But when it came time to finish drives, the Knights let a few plays escape. Pittsburgh’s only field goal came after UCF failed to get the final stop, allowing a 17-yard completion from Mason Heintschel on 3rd-and-7 and then a 9-yard run by Damon Ferguson Jr. on 4th-and-1.
That’s the kind of sequence senior EDGE Ken Talley wants cleaned up.
"Keep strength to the ball, keep stacking days, learning from, like, the bad plays," Talley said during Monday's media availability. "Things where we could have gotten down for maybe two yards instead of four yards."
UCF gets a chance to put that lesson to work Saturday against Georgia State, a game the Knights are heavily favored to win as they look to finish non-conference play 2-1. Georgia State went 1-11 last season.
Talley, a redshirt senior, is one of the veterans anchoring a defense built on experience. UCF has 13 starting seniors on that side of the ball, and Talley said that age shows in the way the group approaches each week.
"That's the thing I love about our group, you know, a very experienced group of guys," Talley said. "We're never complacent, man. We keep getting more and more hungry as we go."
So far, the production backs that up. UCF is allowing nine points per game, with 19 total points surrendered, which ranks second in the Big 12 behind Kansas State. Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch has continued to shape the unit into one of the conference’s most reliable groups, building on the secondary’s top-three pass-defense finish last season in his first year running the defense.
Georgia State brings a different kind of test. The Panthers are 2-0, already past last year’s win total, and they’re putting up 45 points per game. Cameran Brown, in his final season at quarterback, has thrown for 448 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
UCF’s defense handled Pittsburgh’s explosive offense well enough to win the game, and the focus now is on making sure the next opponent doesn’t find those same cracks. This week, the Knights are back in the film room, sorting through the mistakes and trying to turn a strong start into a complete one.
