Mick Cronin Praises UCF Ahead of First UCLA Showdown

In their first-ever clash, UCLA's Mick Cronin praises UCF's dynamic play and standout talent as they gear up for an exciting NCAA Tournament showdown.

As the UCF Knights prepare to face off against the UCLA Bruins this Friday, all eyes are on the intriguing matchup between these two basketball programs. While this marks their first encounter, Bruins head coach Mick Cronin is no stranger to the Knights. Having spent 13 seasons leading the Cincinnati Bearcats, Cronin is well-acquainted with UCF, a familiar foe from his past.

In anticipation of their NCAA Tournament clash in Philadelphia, Cronin has taken a deep dive into the current UCF squad and emerged with high praise for Johnny Dawkins' team.

"They're athletic and can really score, averaging 81 points a game," Cronin shared with the media in Los Angeles. "I'm really impressed."

One player who has particularly caught Cronin's eye is UCF's point guard, Themus Fulks. He's been a pivotal force in the Knights' offensive success this season.

"Fulks is impressive," Cronin noted. "With 214 assists this season, that's seven per game.

That kind of playmaking ability is crucial. He breaks defenses down, creating opportunities for others.

His skills remind me of the great playmakers like Donovan Dent, Trent Perry, and Skyy Clark."

Cronin also took a moment to acknowledge Johnny Dawkins' significant impact on UCF basketball, highlighting their shared history during his Cincinnati days.

"Before Dawkins, Central Florida wasn't seen as a high major program," Cronin explained. "He’s transformed them, and we had many battles in the American Conference."

The last time Cronin and Dawkins faced each other was in a nail-biting game on March 7, 2019, where UCF edged out a 58-55 victory over No. 19 Cincinnati.

Now, with a fresh chapter set to unfold, fans can expect an exciting showdown on Friday at 7:25 p.m. ET, airing on TBS.
