In a thrilling showdown, the Knights pulled off an impressive 8-0 run to force overtime and secure a nail-biting 66-65 victory over Cincinnati, punching their ticket to March Madness.
This first-round Big 12 Tournament clash carried extra significance, with both teams on the bubble for a coveted NCAA Tournament spot. UCF's win not only cemented their return to the Big Dance after a six-year hiatus but also solidified their status among the tournament's elite.
According to @cbkalert's "tournament lock" series on Instagram, the Knights are now firmly in the field of 68, joining Iowa as Wednesday's additions. Previously, Nebraska and Arizona were the first to secure their spots back in January.
UCF's victory places them alongside Arizona, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Texas Tech, BYU, and TCU as Big 12 teams projected to make the tournament.
Earlier in the week, Matt Murschel from the Orlando Sentinel shared insights from ESPN's bracketologist Joe Lunardi, who suggested that a win in the Big 12 tourney would likely secure UCF's NCAA bid. Lunardi noted that a loss could have put them in jeopardy alongside SMU.
Despite shooting just 34% from the field and a dismal 13% from beyond the arc, the Knights' strategic 1-3-1 pressure defense in the final minutes sparked their decisive 8-0 run.
Cincinnati's senior guard, Day Day Thomas, was the standout in overtime, scoring all seven of the Bearcats' points. Thomas, who struggled earlier, found his rhythm with three consecutive baskets, including a crucial three-pointer.
This victory not only highlights UCF's resilience but also sets the stage for an exciting March Madness journey.
