UCF is leaning toward getting its top quarterback back just as Kansas enters Saturday’s Big 12 matchup in Lawrence trying to steady itself after another frustrating finish.
Alonza Barnett III, who missed five games after suffering a hamstring injury Sept. 12 against Pitt, stepped in after Keyone Jenkins aggravated an ankle injury in last Friday’s 41-9 home loss to Baylor. Barnett finished 8 of 16 for 133 yards in relief for the Knights (4-4, 2-3 Big 12), and coach Scott Frost said the outlook is favorable for him to start.
"I think Alonza is healthy," Frost said. "We are trending towards him playing."
Barnett has thrown for 477 yards this season with two touchdowns and an interception. He was listed as probable on Wednesday’s injury report, while Jenkins is questionable.
UCF may also have another weapon available in Duane Thomas Jr., who missed the Knights’ first six games with a hamstring injury before returning to catch seven passes for 44 yards over the last two games.
"He’s an important part of our team that we were missing for a long time," Frost said. "I am glad that he’s back."
The Knights will be without offensive lineman Owen Spell and defensive tackle RJ Jackson Jr. for the rest of the regular season because of injuries.
Kansas (3-5, 1-4) comes in after letting a 13-0 halftime lead slip away in a 22-16 road loss to TCU last Saturday. Even though the Jayhawks outgained the Horned Frogs 451-286, coach Lance Leipold pointed to a long list of issues.
"We have to pass protect better," Leipold said. "But there are a lot of things execution-wise. It’s not just one position, it’s holistic."
When asked if the team’s recent struggles are tied to confidence, Leipold didn’t offer a firm answer.
"I can’t say it is or isn’t," Leipold said.
Kansas also has questions at quarterback. Backup Cole Ballard threw for 285 yards with a touchdown and an interception against TCU after Isaiah Marshall was sidelined with a lower leg injury. Marshall, Ballard and third-string quarterback Chase Jenkins were all listed as questionable on Wednesday.
No matter who lines up under center for Kansas, Leipold knows UCF’s defensive front will be a problem.
"I think their defensive tackles compare with anyone in the league," Leipold said. "They also have good edge players."

UCF Faces A Sneaky Early Test Against A Team Fans Rarely See
Yales visit to Orlando gives UCF an early nonconference test against a program Knights fans almost never see, and it comes with a little extra intrigue because the Bulldogs already have a season-opening win under their belt. Yale is led by longtime coach James Jones and brings a familiar Ivy League profile built around structure, patience and a lineup that can make opponents work for every clean look.
For UCF, the game also arrives with some roster questions still taking shape after the opener, including how the Knights want to line up in the backcourt and who settles into the starting group. Yales core includes transfer Connor May along with forwards Trevor Mullin and Riley Fox, and the matchup carries the feel of a rare intersection between two programs that do not cross paths often, which makes the first meeting in more than three decades worth a closer look. Dior Johnson Just Gave UCF Fans A Reason To Watch Friday
Johnny Dawkins decision to bring Dior Johnson back for another season already looks like one of the early storylines worth watching around UCF. In the season opener, Johnson delivered a huge night in a 96-95 overtime win over Florida Gulf Coast, giving the Knights exactly the kind of late-game shot creation they were hoping to have back in the rotation.
Johnson did most of his damage after halftime and kept pushing the pace into the extra session, helping UCF survive a tight one on a night when every possession mattered. The Knights needed calm at the line to finish it off, and Johnson was right in the middle of the pressure moments, a reminder that Fridays game could be worth circling if he keeps carrying that load. UCF Had No Answer For Floridas Transfer Star In Blowout Loss
Floridas first road test under new coach Tammi Reiss turned into a showcase for Kiyomi McMiller, the transfer guard who arrived with plenty of buzz and left little doubt about why. McMiller erupted for a career-high 42 points and buried 7 of 10 shots from beyond the arc as the Gators rolled past UCF, 95-65, to move to 2-0. Vivian Iwuchukwu and Vanessa Harris also chipped in as Floridas offense kept finding answers all night.
For UCF, the issue was less about one hot hand than a game that got away from them once Florida settled in and started stretching the floor. The Knights never found a way to slow McMillers rhythm, and the margin kept growing as the Gators supporting cast added to the pressure. It was the kind of loss that leaves a lot to sort through, even if the bigger picture for Florida looks increasingly promising early in Reiss tenure. [Read more 🡒]
