Gus Malzahn Lands Surprise CFP Committee Role

Gus Malzahn, former head coach at UCF, joins the College Football Playoff selection committee, promising to bring fresh insights and a commitment to integrity alongside Jeff Tedford.

Gus Malzahn, a name synonymous with innovation and passion in college football, is stepping into a new arena. As he retires from coaching, Malzahn is set to influence the sport from a different angle by joining the College Football Playoff (CFP) selection committee. This move ensures that while he may be leaving the sidelines, his impact on the game continues.

Announced on Monday, Malzahn, alongside former Cal head coach Jeff Tedford, will become part of the influential group responsible for selecting the 12 teams that enter the playoff field and seeding the top 25 throughout the season. This committee plays a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of college football, and Malzahn's inclusion promises to bring fresh insights.

Rich Clark, the CFP executive director, expressed enthusiasm about the new additions, stating, "The additions of Bryan Maggard, Gus Malzahn, and Jeff Tedford will introduce strong, fresh perspectives to the selection committee as we enter our 13th season. Each brings a deep understanding of the game, a genuine passion for college football, and a commitment to integrity and excellence."

Malzahn's journey to the committee follows his stint at Florida State University, where he led the Seminoles to a strong start, including a notable victory over Alabama. Despite a challenging finish to the season, his influence was undeniable.

Before his time at Florida State, Malzahn left a mark at UCF, where he coached for four seasons. Known for his inventive play-calling and offensive creativity, he guided the Knights to three bowl appearances. His standout season came in 2021, achieving an 8-4 regular season and a victory over Florida in the Gasparilla Bowl.

Reflecting on that win, Malzahn shared his excitement: “Yeah, this is just the beginning. I really believe it.

We got big dreams. We got big goals.

We can win the whole thing here and I think tonight was just the first step.”

However, the transition to the Big 12 brought its challenges. Despite a promising start in his final season at UCF, the team faced difficulties, ending with a 4-8 record. Yet, Malzahn’s dedication to the program and his unique perspective remain invaluable.

As he joins the CFP selection committee, Malzahn brings a wealth of experience and a distinctive viewpoint that promises to enrich the decision-making process. His journey continues to captivate college football fans, and his new role ensures he remains a central figure in shaping the sport's future.
