Dior Johnson Gives UCF The Scoring Threat Fans Have Wanted

Dior Johnson's return to UCF brings renewed optimism as the talented shooting guard aims to transform his on-court success into victories for the Knights in the highly competitive Big 12.

Dior Johnson is back in Orlando, and UCF is counting on the scoring punch he sharpened at Tarleton State to carry over to the Big 12.

Johnson, who spent the 2024-2025 season with the Knights, rejoined the program after a breakout year elsewhere and spoke about the move at the Big 12’s Media Day alongside UCF head coach Johnny Dawkins and Wofford transfer guard Cayden Vasko. For Johnson, the return is about more than familiarity.

"The student section is great," Johnson said. "They love basketball.

They love the school. Its a very big university.

They embrace sports, and I'm so happy to be back."

His first run with UCF was short on opportunity. Limited by lingering injuries and a crowded guard room, Johnson appeared in 35 games but averaged only 8.5 minutes per contest and never earned a start. He scored in double figures just once in the regular season, finishing with 11 points against Wisconsin in the Greenbrier Tip-Off.

Still, he gave the Knights a glimpse of what he could do when the lights got brightest. In the College Basketball Crown semifinals, Johnson scored a season-high 13 points and buried three 3-pointers as UCF outlasted Villanova 104-98 in overtime.

After that, Johnson had chances to move on to another Power 4 program, but chose Tarleton State and a chance to prove himself. That decision paid off in a big way. He averaged 24.0 points per game and shot 50/47/85, all while coming off the bench.

Even with that offensive explosion, Johnson made clear in late July that he views himself as more than just a scorer.

""I just want to be a winner," Johnson said. "I know everybody is high on my offense, wondering how its going to translate or what I'm going to do this year, but my play will speak for itself."

That message showed up again in UCF’s exhibition against LSU, even in a loss. Johnson led the Knights with 18 points and scored 16 of them in the second half, showing the kind of shot-making that can change a game in a hurry.

With junior big man John Bol and last year’s leading scorer Riley Kugel also back, and Dawkins adding more talent through the portal, UCF will bring far more returning production into this season than it has in recent years. Johnson’s return gives the Knights a proven bucket getter who has already shown he can adapt, score efficiently and make an immediate impact.

UCF Keeps Showing Enough To Believe Until The Second Half

UCF keeps giving itself a chance against ranked opponents, and then watching those chances slip away after halftime. The Knights have been competitive early in back-to-back games against Houston and Oklahoma State, with Keyone Jenkins helping the offense move the ball and keep the pressure on higher-ranked teams, but the better stretches have not been enough to sustain a full 60 minutes.

Now the challenge only gets bigger with No. 2 BYU coming to town after its upset of then-No. 2 Notre Dame. Bear Bachmeier has been a key part of that breakthrough, and it leaves UCF trying to do something it has not done in the last couple of weeks: carry its first-half momentum all the way through against an elite opponent. BYU Gets A Huge Opportunity In A Top-10 Road Test At UCF

BYU heads into Saturdays Top-10 road test at UCF with a chance to keep its unbeaten Big 12 run intact, but the matchup comes with plenty of uncertainty on the Knights side. UCFs injury report is crowded, with a significant number of players listed as questionable or probable, and the availability of starting quarterback Alonza Barnett III is still a major storyline heading into the game.

If Barnett cannot go, backup Keyone Jenkins is in line for his fifth straight start, adding another layer to a game already carrying high stakes for both teams. UCF is dealing with injuries across the roster, including a heavy presence up front, while BYU arrives as a 6.5-point favorite despite being without its starting running back, LJ Martin. UCF Heads Into BYU Showdown With A Lineup Problem Fans Feared

UCFs injury picture got a lot murkier heading into Saturdays matchup with No. 2 BYU, and the timing could hardly be worse. The Knights are already navigating a difficult road test, and the latest availability report leaves the offense and defense both with uncertainty, including issues along the line and in the secondary.

The biggest concern is the backfield, where Taevion Swint will not be available, while Alonza Barnett III and Duane Thomas Jr. have moved into questionable territory. Lewis Carter is also out, adding another hit to the defense, and UCF is still monitoring several other key pieces, with center Jacob Maiava, cornerback DJ Bell and guard Owen Spell among those dealing with injuries as the Knights try to piece together a workable rotation.
