Big 12 Conference Stuns Fans by Reverting to Traditional Tournament Floor

Big 12 pivots to traditional hardwood flooring for tournament's crucial stages, putting player safety at the forefront after LED court concerns.

In an unexpected twist, the Big 12 Conference is making a swift pivot from its much-talked-about LED glass court back to a traditional hardwood floor for the men's semifinals and finals. This decision comes after some buzz-and not all positive-about the innovative court design.

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark shared the news late Thursday, emphasizing that the change aims to ensure the best experience for student-athletes on this major stage. "After consulting with the coaches of our four Semifinal teams, we're transitioning to a hardwood court for the rest of the Tournament. We anticipate thrilling Semifinals and a Championship Game," Yormark stated.

The LED court, installed at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, was initially praised for its cutting-edge graphics. However, several players pointed out the surface's slipperiness, with Texas Tech's Christian Anderson suffering a groin injury during their clash with Iowa State.

Kansas head coach Bill Self weighed in after his team's victory over TCU. "I think it's the right move," Self remarked.

"I didn't notice much slipping, but watching the games, you could see steps sliding just a bit. It's a cool floor, but I'm glad the focus will shift to the semifinals rather than the court."

Arizona's Brayden Burries, fresh off a win against UCF, also commented on the court's quirks. "You just have to adjust quickly.

The first few minutes are key. The only issue was the LED lights affecting free throws, but it's manageable," Burries explained.

As the Big 12 Tournament semifinals approach, fans are gearing up for Friday's matchups. Iowa State takes on Arizona at 7 p.m.

ET, followed by a showdown between Houston and Kansas at 9:30 p.m. ET, both airing on ESPN.

The switch to hardwood promises a focus on the action, not the playing surface.
