Antione Jackson Is Turning Into A Huge X Factor For UCF

Antione Jackson's standout performances bolster UCFs defense as they prepare for a pivotal clash against ranked opponents.

Antione Jackson’s name is starting to carry some weight nationally, and UCF’s latest defensive surge is a big reason why.

The third-year Knights corner has been a steady force in Alex Grinch’s secondary, and after another standout performance in UCF’s 21-13 win over TCU, he’s now being recognized as one of the top defensive backs in the FBS. On Monday, Pro Football Network’s Cam Mellor ranked Jackson No. 6 among the nation’s top corners, giving him a 92.0 grade.

That kind of praise fits what has shown up on the field. UCF’s defense has opened the season strong through four weeks, holding TCU to 13 points in the Big 12 opener and generating multiple takeaways. The back end has done plenty of the heavy lifting, with veterans Jayden Bellamy, Demari Henderson and Jackson locking things down on the perimeter.

Jackson, a Lauderhill, Fla., native, has turned himself into a major piece of the unit. He started all 12 games last season after becoming a real contributor, and in April he talked about what he wanted this year to look like.

"I want to do whatever I can to help the team be as close as possible," Jackson said in April. "Build a brotherhood and want to have a winning season, man."

So far, UCF has looked loose and connected, and Jackson has backed that up with production. Against TCU, he grabbed his second interception as a Knight and his first since 2024. With just under four minutes left and UCF clinging to a 21-13 lead, the 6-foot-1 corner stepped in front of a pass, picked it off and returned it 19 yards to help seal the conference-opening win.

He also finished second on the team with four tackles, showing he can do more than just cover ground on the outside. He was active in space and around the ball all night.

Now the challenge gets much bigger. UCF is heading into a brutal three-game stretch against ranked opponents, starting Saturday against No.

20 Houston. The Cougars have looked like one of the top three teams in the conference, and senior quarterback Connor Weigman has been on a heater, throwing 11 touchdowns against just one interception.

Still, UCF has had some success against him before. In last season’s Space Game, Weigman was intercepted three times by Knights defensive back Phillip Dunnam. UCF didn’t win that one, but the tape gave Grinch something to work with.

Senior receiver Amare Thomas is still Houston’s top target, which means Jackson, Bellamy and Henderson figure to be focused on him and Weigman early. If UCF’s secondary keeps playing at this level, Jackson should stay right in the middle of the conversation.

UCF May Have An Offensive Problem Heading Into Houston

UCFs offense heads into a tough road test at No. 20 Houston with a few familiar concerns, and one of the biggest involves tight end Dylan Wade. Wade has become an important part of the passing game after setting single-season records for a UCF tight end last year, giving the Knights a reliable target in the middle of the field and another layer to an offense that can ill afford to lose efficiency against a ranked opponent.

His availability is now in question after he picked up an upper-body injury in the previous game, leaving UCF to sort through its options at a time when the receiving group is already dealing with other injury-related uncertainty. The Knights do not just need bodies on the field in Houston, they need players who can help keep the offense from becoming too thin in a game where every dependable target matters. [Read more 🡒]

UCF Heads To Houston With A Lineup Problem Fans Know Too Well

UCF is headed to Houston still trying to patch together a lineup that has been missing key pieces for weeks, and the availability picture does not look much friendlier this time around. Scott Frost said in his weekly update that several players remain in the usual gray area of day-to-day and questionable, but the Knights will again have to plan without a few starters as they prepare for the Cougars.

The contrast across the sideline only sharpens the concern, with Houston dealing with a much smaller list of absences heading into Saturday. For UCF, the uncertainty is the more frustrating part, especially with multiple contributors still not cleared and a couple more players sitting in the questionable category after taking bumps in recent games. UCF Injury Pileup Puts Pressure On Keyone Jenkins Fast

UCFs offense has already had to adjust early, with starting quarterback Alonza Barnett III out and receiver Duane Thomas Jr. also sidelined, leaving the Knights to lean more heavily on backup Keyone Jenkins. Through the first two starts of his college career, Jenkins has given the staff a steady hand, even setting a program record for completion percentage in his second start as the Knights try to keep the passing game afloat.

Help is on the way at receiver with Jonathan Bibbs expected to return, a boost UCF could use as the schedule stiffens against ranked opponents. But the injury list is still a moving target, and the latest concern only adds to the pressure on an offense that has little margin for error while Jenkins continues to settle into the job.
