Alonza Barnett III’s first start for UCF didn’t ask for perfection. It asked for control, poise and enough playmaking to keep Bethune-Cookman from ever finding daylight, and the redshirt senior delivered that in a 73-6 blowout.
The James Madison transfer completed 11 of 18 passes for 158 yards, threw one touchdown and ran for another. He also had a rougher stretch tucked into the box score: an interception in the final minute of the first half, a missed third-down throw on a drive that ended in a punt and an 11-yard sack on a third down right before a Knights field goal.
Barnett’s night ended early after he guided UCF on another scoring drive to open the second half. The Knights had already built a 45-0 lead, and three other quarterbacks on the roster got work from there.
On Tuesday, offensive coordinator Steve Cooper gave Barnett a measured review - plenty of praise, but no sugarcoating either.
"To give him credit, the things I thought he did really well, he managed the offense, he took the easy stuff. Areas that he needs to continue to grow, and he'd be the first to say it, you know, there was a couple open guys that we missed and then obviously the interception and two-minute drill," Cooper noted.
"So those are things that he's going to continue to get better at. I got no doubt in that.
But yeah, I was very pleased to see how well he ran the offense."
Barnett was just as direct when he looked back on the performance after Thursday’s game.
"Yeah, there's some good, some bad, some ugly," Barnett said of his performance. "Some things that I obviously wish I had back.
But at the end of the day, you have to wipe it. You know, recognize you won't go perfect, but chase that perfection each and every day - which is what I'll continue to do.
And, you know, those things will get clicking."
Cooper pointed to Barnett’s experience as one of the reasons UCF expects him to keep settling in, especially with a postseason berth in view.
"Obviously, the experience helps a lot. There's so many things are underappreciated from maybe the fans, maybe the media, maybe guys that aren't on the offense side of the ball or just not in the quarterback room that you know you're juggling every play, and I thought he did did a really good job of that."
Barnett’s next test comes on the road against Pittsburgh, a team that opened its season last week with a 59-14 win over Miami (OH). UCF and the Panthers kickoff Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Thirteen former UCF players have made NFL rosters as the 2026-27 regular season gets going, giving Knights fans plenty of reason to keep one eye on Sundays. The group is spread across a handful of teams, with some alumni opening the year as starters, others as backups, and a few tucked onto practice squads as they look for a bigger foothold.

UCF And USF Are Still Far Apart On War On I-4
The War on I-4 has been dormant since 2022, but the bigger issue now is that UCF and USF still are not even close to bringing it back. UCF athletic director Terry Mohajir has made clear the Knights are approaching future scheduling with a very specific financial and competitive model, while USF athletic director Rob Higgins has continued to press for a reunion in whatever form might work.
Higgins has already shown a willingness to get creative, including a home-and-home option that could begin as early as 2031 and a broader four-game setup with neutral-site dates in Orlando and Tampa. UCF, though, has not moved off its position, leaving one of the states most recognizable rivalries in limbo and the path back to the series still unclear. [Read more 🡒]
Sincere Edwards Gives UCF A New Twist Before Pitt Showdown
UCFs defense came out of the Bethune-Cookman game with plenty to feel good about, holding the Wildcats under 200 yards while generating sacks and turnovers. A big part of that effort was junior EDGE Sincere Edwards, who was active around the line of scrimmage and finished with five tackles while helping the Knights set a more disruptive tone on defense.
Edwards now gets a different kind of spotlight with Pittsburgh next on the schedule, and the matchup adds a personal layer to an already important test for UCF. The former Panther is expected to be a key piece again when the Knights line up against his old program, giving UCF a familiar face with a little extra motivation in a game that should carry some edge of its own.
