Xavier Legette has been one of the bright spots of Panthers training camp, and with Chris Brazzell now out for the season, that spotlight only gets brighter.
Brazzell’s knee injury changed the picture for Carolina’s receiver room almost immediately. The third-round pick, one of the front office’s “favorite” prospects in the 2026 draft field, tore a ligament in his knee and was ruled out earlier this week. At Fan Fest on Friday, he watched from a motorbike on the turf sideline while the Panthers took the field under the Bank of America Stadium lights.
The bigger question inside the building was what that means for Legette, who is coming off a disappointing 2025 but has put together a strong summer. Dave Canales didn’t need much time to answer it.
“Business as usual,” he said.
He followed that up with a fuller explanation of why the Panthers still expect plenty from the former South Carolina standout.
“We have big plans for him,” Canales said. “He’s got big plans for himself.
And he’s been working hard at it. Again, had a great offseason, and carried it right into training camp.
And you saw him make a couple of plays today.”
Legette’s progress has gone well beyond one practice. The 6-foot-3, 221-pound receiver is down about 7 to 10 pounds from his playing weight a year ago, and he’s been working to “bulletproof” his hamstrings after dealing with soft tissue issues in past camps.
He’s also made noticeable changes to the way he plays the ball, catching it with his hands instead of his chest and staying in bounds along the sideline more consistently. Just as important, the mental mistakes that drew negative attention in 2025 have largely disappeared.
Canales said the quarterback-receiver connection is showing up, too.
“The timing is there,” Canales said. “Bryce knows him.
He understands what we’re trying to get done, and he’s working his butt off. I’m really proud of where he’s at, and can’t wait to see where we go from here.”
Jalen Coker has seen it as well. He said Brazzell brought “a different element” to the offense with his catch radius, speed and deep-threat ability, but he also made it clear Legette has been rolling.
“I mean, he’s been balling,” Coker said of Legette. “He’s just special out there.
He really is. His ability to catch the ball.
His athleticism. His route running.
He really is a one-of-a-kind athlete, player and a person, too. So I mean, I can’t say enough good things about him.”
Brazzell’s injury doesn’t just open the door for Legette, though. It creates opportunities all over the receiver room. Canales pointed to Bryce Tremayne, who has already carved out a role on special teams and made plays at receiver last year, along with Brycen, David Moore and Ja’Seem Reed.
“He does a lot of the dirty work,” Canales said of Tremayne. “We asked him to go in and dig out safeties and do different things in the run game, but in the pass game, he can play all the spots, and that’s really valuable.
“You know, we have a lot of guys like that. Brycen’s one of them.
David Moore is another. Ja’Seem Reed has been a guy that we’re really trusting right now with just being able to step in at different spots.”
He added: “This is a very competitive room to start with. We certainly had high hopes for Chris, and the way that we could use him in our offense. And while that’s not going to happen this year, we have a bunch of guys that we really count on and trust.”
Friday also brought a few other updates from Fan Fest. Cornerback Robert Rochell, tight end Tommy Tremble, tight end Mitchell Evans, offensive lineman Robert Hunt and offensive lineman Damien Lewis were the only players on the camp roster who did not practice. Receiver Malick Meiga out of Coastal Carolina also appeared to get hurt during practice.
Canales said the Panthers did not add a fourth quarterback for camp after working out Kyle Trask earlier in the week, calling it a “luxury” they couldn’t afford because of other needs.
Ryan Fitzgerald had a solid night, knocking through two 53-yard field goals.
And the play of the day belonged to Coker, who was asked to take a snap and run a trick play at quarterback. His first pass in Bank of America Stadium was picked off by Jaycee Horn, and Coker said with a smile that Horn “wasn’t supposed to be there.”
The evening ended on a high note when Make-A-Wish participant Asher Harvey scored a touchdown and the Panthers lifted the 6-year-old onto their shoulders. Harvey’s favorite Panthers are Sir Purr, “Coach” and Bryce Young.
