Tetairoa McMillan owned Sunday night.
The Panthers’ second-year star put together the sharpest outing of his young career in Week 4, piling up 14 catches for 192 yards and two touchdowns in Carolina’s 32-26 win over the Lions. It was the kind of night that kept finding new ways to tilt toward him, with Bryce Young leaning on McMillan again and again whenever Carolina needed a play.
McMillan’s first score came on a 32-yard strike in the second quarter, and he added a 10-yard touchdown in the third. From there, he kept stacking receptions and momentum, turning into Young’s most reliable answer all night. One of the biggest moments came late in the fourth quarter, when McMillan somehow got both feet down near the sideline on an 18-yard grab to move the chains on third-and-14.
The performance stood out even more because of what came before it. McMillan had been limited to just two catches for 17 yards in last week’s loss to Cleveland, so this was a clear bounce-back and then some. The 14 receptions and 192 yards were both single-game career highs.
Carolina got plenty of help elsewhere, too. Chuba Hubbard powered the ground game with 122 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, averaging 6.1 yards per attempt. Young finished 29-of-41 for 329 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, steering an offense that stayed productive all night.
Detroit moved the ball as well, but the Panthers made the biggest plays when it mattered. Jared Goff went 32-of-52 for 412 yards with a touchdown, and the game featured no turnovers from either side.
Even so, Carolina’s defense kept the Lions from ever fully taking control. Down 13 in the fourth quarter, Detroit came away empty on a turnover on downs with 7:04 left deep in Panthers territory.
Then, with 2:06 remaining and trailing by six, the Lions again failed to move the chains, effectively sealing the result.
The game also brought a few injury concerns. Panthers rookie right tackle Monroe Freeling left with a knee injury and did not return, while edge rusher Jaelan Phillips exited with a hamstring injury. Lions cornerback Rock Ya-Sin also did not come back after suffering a hamstring injury.
Carolina moves to 2-2 and heads into a Week 5 bye before facing the Eagles in Week 6. The Lions also sit at 2-2 and will stay on the road in Week 4 against the Cardinals.

Jahmyr Gibbs Just Gave Panthers Fans The Weirdest SNF Moment Yet
Sunday Night Football had already given Panthers fans enough to process, but Jahmyr Gibbs added a strange little detour when he introduced himself as being from Hollywood Arts, the fictional school from the TV show Victorious. The moment stood out immediately during the Lions-Panthers matchup, because it was not the kind of standard pregame or broadcast detail viewers usually hear on a national stage.
Social media lit up over the reference, which landed as one of those only-on-SNF oddities that travels fast beyond the game itself. Gibbs has drawn attention before for reasons outside football, including a tattoo, so this latest bit of off-field flair only added to the sense that he keeps finding unexpected ways to stay in the conversation. Panthers Made A Prime-Time Statement Despite One Troubling Issue
Sunday night felt like a long-awaited showcase for Carolina, and the Panthers delivered one of their sharper offensive outings in a decade. It was their first appearance on Sunday Night Football in 10 years, and the group around Bryce Young looked organized enough to make the stage feel a little bigger than the moment. The game also offered a useful snapshot of how this roster is coming together, with Brad Idziks offense finding answers and Ejiro Everos defense doing enough to keep the night competitive.
Still, the film left one issue hard to ignore. The offensive line had rough patches, with Luke Fortner and Robert Hunt both showing their struggles, even as Young kept playing effectively under pressure and Chuba Hubbard turned in a breakout performance. Akayleb Evans had mixed results in coverage, which is the kind of uneven stretch Carolina can live with only if the protection in front of the quarterback steadies itself soon. [Read more 🡒]
Panthers Win Showed Real Growth But Left One New Concern
The Panthers primetime win over the Lions did more than add another result to the ledger. It offered a clear snapshot of a team that looked more connected on both sides of the ball, with the offense finding a better balance between the pass game and the run game and Bryce Young delivering a spotless evening as a passer. Even with the defense missing its top two cornerbacks, Carolina still found enough stability to control enough of the night and show that the progress it has been chasing is starting to show up in games that matter.
Devin Lloyds return gave the defense a lift, but the performance also pointed to where the next step has to come. The Panthers did not consistently get enough pressure on Jared Goff, and that kind of issue can linger even after a good win if it is not cleaned up. There was also concern after injuries to Monroe Freeling and Jaelan Phillips, two absences that could matter quickly if the team is forced to navigate them for any length of time. [Read more 🡒]
