The Carolina Panthers have added another proven target for Bryce Young, agreeing to a one-year deal with former Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.
"Former Pro-Bowl tight end Darren Waller and the Carolina Panthers reached agreement today on a one-year deal, per source," Schefter reported on X.
It’s the latest move in Carolina’s effort to keep stacking help around Young as the Panthers head into the 2026 NFL season with far bigger expectations than they’ve carried in years. After a playoff run and an NFC South title last season, the pressure is now on to prove that progress was real.
Waller gives the Panthers another interesting piece on offense, even if he’s no longer the player who once put up monster numbers. Last season, the 33-year-old appeared in nine games for the Miami Dolphins and finished with 24 catches for 283 yards and six touchdowns. In 2023 with the New York Giants, he had 52 receptions for 552 yards and one touchdown across 12 games.
His biggest season came in 2020 with the Las Vegas Raiders, when he made his lone Pro Bowl and posted 107 catches for 1,196 yards and nine touchdowns in 16 games.
The expectation in Carolina isn’t that Waller will rediscover that peak form. The more realistic view is that he can settle in as a dependable option and give Young another reliable outlet when the quarterback needs one.
Young, now 25, is coming off the best season of his career. In 16 regular-season games in 2025, he completed 63.6 percent of his passes for 3,011 yards, 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, while also rushing for 216 yards and two scores.
From the outside, the Panthers now look like a team with playoff-level potential in the NFC. If the roster delivers on what it appears capable of, Carolina could be a tough out.
