The Carolina Panthers left Week 1 with plenty of offense and even more defensive concern after a 59-37 loss to the Chicago Bears.
Bryce Young did his part to keep Carolina in the fight. He finished 23 of 37 for 361 yards, three touchdowns and an interception, while also adding 10 rushing yards and a score on two carries. Jalen Coker was his top target, catching eight passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns, and reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Tetairoa McMillan added five receptions for 75 yards.
Chuba Hubbard led the Panthers’ ground game with 10 carries for 49 yards and a touchdown. Jonathon Brooks had just four rushing attempts for 14 yards, but he also turned in an explosive 48-yard catch.
Still, the story of the day was Carolina’s defense getting run over. The Bears piled up 291 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 39 carries, and the Panthers never found an answer.
D'Andre Swift led the charge with 124 touchdowns and three touchdowns on 18 carries, while Kyle Monangai added 100 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Caleb Williams chipped in 65 yards and two touchdowns on 10 attempts.
Williams was sharp as a passer, too, completing 21 of 29 throws for 269 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Carolina poured major resources into the defense this offseason, bringing in linebacker Devin Lloyd on a three-year, $45 million contract and pass rusher Jaelan Phillips on a four-year, $120 million deal. Lloyd made his presence felt with 13 total tackles in his debut, while Phillips recorded a sack and a tackle for loss.
There were moments from both newcomers, but the overall unit has a lot to clean up if the Panthers want to chase the NFC South and return to the postseason for a second straight year.
The other costly issue for Carolina was two fumbles, which only made an already rough afternoon harder to survive.
For all the problems on one side of the ball, the Panthers can at least walk away knowing the offense looked dangerous. The bigger question now is whether the defense can catch up.
