The Panthers are taking a hard look at a familiar name at running back as Jonathon Brooks’ injury leaves the backfield thin.
Carolina worked out former second-team All-Pro Austin Ekeler on Wednesday, according to Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com. Wilson reported, "Veteran free agent running back Austin Ekeler works out today for the Carolina Panthers," and added that Ekeler is now fully healthy after spending the offseason recovering from a torn Achilles.
Ekeler’s 2025 season ended after just two games because of that injury. Before that, he had spent two seasons with the Washington Commanders after a seven-year run with the Los Angeles Chargers.
The appeal is obvious. Even with the wear and tear that comes with a 31-year-old back, Ekeler still brings production, versatility and experience.
In the season before the Achilles tear, he logged 77 carries for 367 yards, a 4.8 yards-per-carry average, and four touchdowns in 12 games. He also added 35 catches for 366 yards.
Over his career, he has piled up 4,765 rushing yards and 4,288 receiving yards, and he’s known as a dependable pass protector.
There are obvious red flags, too. Ekeler has had trouble staying on the field recently, missing three games in 2023, five in 2024 and 15 in 2025.
Still, Carolina’s situation makes the workout easy to understand. Brooks has been dealing with a groin injury since training camp, then re-aggravated it in Week 2 and left the game early. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Brooks will have core muscle surgery and is expected to miss about six weeks.
That comes on top of a rough injury history for Brooks, who tore his ACL for a second time in 2024 and missed all of 2025. The Panthers clearly can’t count on him to be the 1B to Chuba Hubbard’s 1A, and that leaves the team searching for help.
Brooks has also had limited production when available, with just nine carries for 30 yards, two receptions for 43 yards and one catch that went for a five-yard loss.
Right now, Hubbard and AJ Dillon are the only healthy running backs on Carolina’s 53-man roster. The practice squad options are Ahmani Marshall and Anthony Tyus II, both inexperienced. That’s why a veteran like Ekeler makes so much sense.
If the workout goes well and no better opportunity comes along, Ekeler could end up in Carolina with a real chance to carve out a meaningful role behind Hubbard.
