Panthers Suddenly Have A Tough Monroe Freeling Decision Up Front

The Panthers' strategy for rookie Monroe Freeling remains under wraps as Coach Dave Canales focuses on maintaining a healthy and effective offensive line amidst a promising season lead.

Dave Canales isn’t tipping his hand on how the Carolina Panthers will handle rookie Monroe Freeling, and after the way the offensive line looked in Week 6, it’s easy to see why.

Carolina beat the Philadelphia Eagles to move to 3-2 and extend its winning streak to two games, following the Week 4 win over the Detroit Lions and the bye week. The Panthers’ offense has been rolling through the first five games, with Bryce Young showing clear progress and a supporting cast that includes Jalen Coker, Tetairoa McMillan and Chuba Hubbard helping push the unit forward.

The line got a major boost this week, too. Right tackle Taylor Moton was back for his first game of the season after missing training camp because of an injury, and he looked like himself in his return.

On the opposite side, free-agent addition Rasheed Walker drew praise as well. Carolina also still has Ikem Ekwonu working back from the injury he suffered last year, giving the staff multiple moving pieces to sort through.

That leaves Freeling in an uncertain spot. He started at right tackle to open the season and wasn’t overwhelmed, but the rookie had the usual ups and downs that come with that jump.

The Panthers made him a first-round pick, so there’s obvious value in getting him on the field. There’s also a case for letting him step back, get healthy and keep developing before forcing the issue.

Canales addressed that balance after the win over the Eagles and made it clear the team won’t rush to lock itself into one plan. He said Freeling matters to the Panthers, but also noted the injury situation and the need to roll with the healthiest options available up front. He also pointed out that Moton looked like his normal self and that Walker impressed.

“This is a first-round pick for us. This is a high-value player for us.

We're gonna do what's best for the Panthers-and we're gonna put the best group, healthiest group out there. So that's a good challenge to Monroe-to see how he responds to the training, the treatment and to see if he shows us how ready he is to play and how we play him.”

For now, the first task for Freeling is getting healthy. After that, the Panthers can decide where he fits best. With the offensive line shaping up as a major factor in how far this team can go, getting the call right on Freeling could matter a lot over the rest of the season.

Panthers Trade Deadline Could Expose One Awkward Roster Fit

The Panthers win over the Eagles only sharpened the conversation around Carolinas next move before the Nov. 10 trade deadline. With the roster still searching for upgrades, Sports Illustrated floated a few names that could make sense for the Panthers, including Philadelphia tight end Dallas Goedert, Seahawks cornerback Riq Woolen and Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston as potential answers to lingering needs.

One reason the deadline feels intriguing is that Carolina may have to sort through fit as much as talent. Any pursuit would have to account for where those players slot into the current mix, and one possible acquisition could create an awkward overlap on a roster that is still taking shape. The Panthers have a chance to improve, but the bigger question may be whether the best available move actually fits cleanly. [Read more 🡒]

Panthers Depth Chart Shows Carolina's Roster Shift Before Bucs Showdown

The Panthers are carrying a noticeably different look into Week 7 after getting Trevor Etienne, Taylor Moton and Tershawn Wharton back on the active roster before last weeks win over the Eagles. Those moves helped stabilize Carolina for a tough stretch, and now the updated depth chart offers a clearer picture of how the team is sorting out its pieces ahead of a divisional meeting with Tampa Bay.

For a roster that has been shuffled by injuries and weekly adjustments, the new alignment matters because it can shape both the rotation and the game plan against the Buccaneers. The chart lays out where Carolina sees its players at each spot, and with another NFC South test on deck, the details behind those rankings could tell as much about the Panthers current direction as the result itself. Bryce Young Is Forcing A Panthers Debate Nobody Expected This Fast

Bryce Young has turned the first five weeks of 2024 into a very different conversation than the one Carolina expected to be having this soon. After the Panthers exercised his fifth-year option, Young responded by setting a new franchise mark with 11 passing touchdowns through the teams first five games, while helping push Carolina to a 3-2 record entering Week 6.

It has not just been about scoring through the air, either. Young has thrown for 1,549 yards with only two interceptions, and he is currently leading the NFL in passing yards per game. For a team that spent much of the last year searching for stability at quarterback, the bigger question now is no longer whether Young can settle in, but how far this version of the Panthers can go if he keeps playing like this.
