The Carolina Panthers came out of Sunday night’s 32-26 win over the Detroit Lions with more than just a statement victory. They also came out with two key players banged up, as edge rusher Jaelan Phillips and tackle Monroe Freeling both left the physical game dealing with injuries.
On Monday, Dave Canales gave Carolina a reason for optimism. Panthers insider Mike Kaye of ESPN reported that Phillips and Freeling are both being viewed as possible returnees for Week 6 against Philadelphia.
“Jaelan Phillips (hamstring) is a ‘hopeful' for Philly in Week 6. Same with Monroe Freeling (knee), per Canales,” Kaye posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.
That would be a major boost for a Panthers team heading into another big NFC matchup. The Eagles sit at 2-2 after their meltdown loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, a team Philadelphia has beaten in each of the last four meetings.
Carolina’s win over Detroit did more than just shake up the league landscape. It also showcased a version of Bryce Young that looked fully in command. Even with Freeling unavailable and the offense absorbing the punishment that came with the night, Young still put together a huge performance.
He completed 29 of 41 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns. Inside Bank of America Stadium, the crowd answered with “M-V-P!” chants, making Young the first Panthers quarterback to hear that chant since Cam Newton.
Young also reached a level the franchise has seen only from Newton, its lone Most Valuable Player winner. His numbers matched a similar primetime achievement from Newton, and he also completed 70% of his passes, joining Newton along with Jake Delhomme and Steve Beuerlein as Panthers quarterbacks to hit that mark.
For Carolina, the injury update is the latest encouraging sign after a night that already showed how dangerous this team can be. If Phillips and Freeling are able to make it back for Week 6, the Panthers may be even tougher to handle.

Jahmyr Gibbs Just Gave Panthers Fans The Weirdest SNF Moment Yet
Sunday Night Football had already given Panthers fans enough to process, but Jahmyr Gibbs added a strange little detour when he introduced himself as being from Hollywood Arts, the fictional school from the TV show Victorious. The moment stood out immediately during the Lions-Panthers matchup, because it was not the kind of standard pregame or broadcast detail viewers usually hear on a national stage.
Social media lit up over the reference, which landed as one of those only-on-SNF oddities that travels fast beyond the game itself. Gibbs has drawn attention before for reasons outside football, including a tattoo, so this latest bit of off-field flair only added to the sense that he keeps finding unexpected ways to stay in the conversation. Panthers Made A Prime-Time Statement Despite One Troubling Issue
Sunday night felt like a long-awaited showcase for Carolina, and the Panthers delivered one of their sharper offensive outings in a decade. It was their first appearance on Sunday Night Football in 10 years, and the group around Bryce Young looked organized enough to make the stage feel a little bigger than the moment. The game also offered a useful snapshot of how this roster is coming together, with Brad Idziks offense finding answers and Ejiro Everos defense doing enough to keep the night competitive.
Still, the film left one issue hard to ignore. The offensive line had rough patches, with Luke Fortner and Robert Hunt both showing their struggles, even as Young kept playing effectively under pressure and Chuba Hubbard turned in a breakout performance. Akayleb Evans had mixed results in coverage, which is the kind of uneven stretch Carolina can live with only if the protection in front of the quarterback steadies itself soon. [Read more 🡒]
Panthers Win Showed Real Growth But Left One New Concern
The Panthers primetime win over the Lions did more than add another result to the ledger. It offered a clear snapshot of a team that looked more connected on both sides of the ball, with the offense finding a better balance between the pass game and the run game and Bryce Young delivering a spotless evening as a passer. Even with the defense missing its top two cornerbacks, Carolina still found enough stability to control enough of the night and show that the progress it has been chasing is starting to show up in games that matter.
Devin Lloyds return gave the defense a lift, but the performance also pointed to where the next step has to come. The Panthers did not consistently get enough pressure on Jared Goff, and that kind of issue can linger even after a good win if it is not cleaned up. There was also concern after injuries to Monroe Freeling and Jaelan Phillips, two absences that could matter quickly if the team is forced to navigate them for any length of time. [Read more 🡒]
