The Carolina Panthers spent most of the week trying to answer one simple question: will Jalen Coker be out there against the Cleveland Browns?
Coker’s ankle has kept him on the report since he rolled it in the Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears. He made it through Week 2 despite carrying a questionable tag, but this time the path looked a little less clean. He never logged a full practice during the week, instead getting limited work twice and missing one session entirely, which left him questionable for Sunday.
Even so, the latest buzz around him is encouraging. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said Coker “should play” against the Browns.
"Panthers WR Jalen Coker (ankle) should play today, while the team views WR Xavier Legette (knee) as a game-time decision," Rapoport reported on Sunday morning.
The Panthers still won’t have their final answer until they release inactives around 11:30 a.m. ET, but there are a couple of reasons for optimism.
For one, Coker did at least finish the week with a limited practice. And The Athletic’s Joe Person added another positive note after Friday’s session.
"Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette looked good running routes during the portion of practice open to the media," he said.
On the field, Coker has already become a major piece of Carolina’s offense. His huge Week 1 performance has him sitting as WR5 overall in PPR formats, according to Fantasy Pros. He cooled off in Week 2, but his eight-catch, 66-yard line still finished as WR18 in fantasy points, which is right in borderline WR2 territory.
The matchup also gives him a real chance to pop again. CBS Sports says Cleveland has allowed the third-most fantasy points per game to wide receivers and is tied for the most touchdowns surrendered to the position at two per game.
So unless the inactive list says otherwise - or the Panthers limit his snaps - Coker looks like a strong Week 3 play.
