The Carolina Panthers have been mentioned as a possible landing spot for Mike Tomlin if he makes his way back to the NFL, and the fit is starting to make a little noise.
Carolina reached the playoffs last season despite finishing 8-9, but the organization is still trying to find more stability heading into 2026. The NFC South has been one of the league’s most uneven divisions in recent years, and the Panthers are hoping to use that to their advantage while building on that postseason trip.
There is still belief inside the building that head coach Dave Canales has the team pointed in the right direction with Bryce Young at quarterback. Even so, the Panthers’ overall performance under Canales has not matched expectations, and there is a sense that his grip on the job may not be completely secure.
That is where Tomlin enters the picture. After parting ways with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, he is taking a year away from football, but league buzz suggests he could return in 2027. If that happens, Carolina has been floated as a realistic possibility.
Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton listed the Panthers as a top destination for Tomlin next season, pointing to both the roster and the division.
"Tomlin has expertise on the defensive side of the ball and may be intrigued by the addition of Pro Bowl linebacker Devin Lloyd, edge-rusher Jaelan Phillips and rookie second-round defensive tackle Lee Hunter. The Panthers could also give him some say-so on how to handle the quarterback position. Lastly, Carolina plays in arguably the league's weakest division, which gives Tomlin a shot at a quick turnaround with immediate results," Moton wrote.
If Tomlin does decide to coach again, any team interested in hiring him would need to work through the Steelers, who still hold his rights. Carolina could be one of the clubs paying attention if the Canales situation goes sideways.
Tomlin’s résumé speaks for itself. In Pittsburgh, he went 193-144-2 in the regular season and 8-12 in the playoffs, while also guiding the Steelers to a Super Bowl title.
There may be stronger openings out there for Tomlin if he returns, but the Panthers have enough going for them to stay in the conversation. They have a young roster, and the weak division gives any coach a clearer path to the postseason.
