On offense, one of the biggest numbers to follow is explosive-play rate. That means any run of 10 yards or more or any pass gain of 20 yards or more. Brad Idzik now has the play-calling duties, and Carolina has spent resources trying to create more of those game-changing moments that were too inconsistent in 2025.
Another key offensive stat is pressure rate allowed, which measures the percentage of dropbacks that end with pressure or a sack. The Panthers invested heavily in the offensive line through the NFL Draft and Free Agency, but injuries to several 2025 holdovers add another layer to the story.
If the protection doesn’t hold, the offense won’t have time to let plays develop. Carolina’s 2025 pressure rate allowed was 30.9%.
Third down conversion rate is also on the offensive watchlist. Dave Canales has made it clear he wants to control the football and control the game, but that gets a lot harder when the offense can’t stay on the field.
Defensively, zone coverage rate is worth monitoring. Under Ejiro Evero, Carolina has used zone at one of the highest rates in the NFL over the past few years. With personnel changes across all three levels of the defense, the question is whether that tendency shifts or remains the same.
Pressure rate is another major defensive marker. The Panthers finished near the bottom of the league in 2025 and need a much better pass rush if they want to consistently slow opposing offenses. That puts a lot on prized free agent addition Jaelen Phillips.
The last defensive number is third down stop rate, which tracks how often opponents turn third downs into first downs. If Carolina’s offense can’t stay on the field and the defense can’t get off it, that’s a problem on both sides of the ball.
