The Carolina Panthers are still early in the season, but Xavier Legette has already landed on a trade board.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox listed the Panthers wide receiver as one of 10 plausible trade candidates before the regular season has really gotten going, and the idea isn’t hard to understand. Legette has not delivered much since arriving, and his hold on a roster spot feels shakier by the day.
Knox pointed to the appeal of a former first-round pick with physical tools, even if the production has lagged far behind the hype.
"Teams looking to take a flier on a former first-round pick are exactly the sort that could be interested in Carolina Panthers wide receiver Xavier Legette. Aside from his draft status and physical upside, the third-year receiver has shown little else to offer," Knox wrote.
He went a step further and projected a modest return: a 2027 conditional fifth-round pick. That would sting for Carolina, especially considering the Panthers gave up more for Jonathan Mingo and traded up for Legette in 2024.
The path to a deal, Knox argued, could open if the Panthers get healthier and deeper at receiver.
"If Jalen Coker can stay healthy and free-agent addition John Metchie III can force himself into a prominent role, the Panthers could quickly decide to cash in Legette for draft capital. Teams looking to add a 6'1", 221-pound pass-catcher with 4.39 speed should be willing to take a chance on him," Knox concluded.
That health piece matters. Coker is already ahead of Legette, and if he stays on the field, Legette’s chances to prove himself shrink even more. Carolina could also be pushed toward a move if Metchie or Jimmy Horn Jr. take a step forward.
Knox named two receiver-needy teams as possible fits: the Kansas City Chiefs and the Las Vegas Raiders.
Still, a trade does not look likely right now. Legette is WR3, and he is filling the role that Chris Brazzell II, who is out for the year, was supposed to handle. Unless Metchie or Horn can clearly take over that job - and that seems unlikely because they do not have Legette’s speed - the Panthers are expected to keep him around.

Jones issue is being described as an aggravation on the opposite side of his back from the injury he dealt with in 2025, which only adds to the uncertainty around how quickly he can get back.
