Deshaun Watson’s place atop the Browns’ quarterback depth chart looks secure for now, but that security reportedly came with a deadline attached.
Cleveland is 1-1 entering its home opener against the 1-1 Carolina Panthers on Sept. 27, and Watson is on track to start that game. But according to Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot on the latest edition of the “Orange and Brown Talk” podcast, things could have gone in a very different direction if Watson had stumbled again against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“If he had lost that game in Tampa,” Cabot said about Watson, “for the Browns to fall to 0-2, Shedeur Sanders was going to be installed as the starting quarterback. [The Browns] were going to come to grips with the fact that we’re probably not making the playoffs.”
That possibility felt real after Watson’s opening-week performance. In Cleveland’s 34-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 13, he went 11-of-17 for 100 yards with an interception through the first three quarters and looked every bit like one of the league’s least effective starters.
Then came the turnaround in Tampa. Watson responded by completing 24 of 30 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns, with the second scoring strike putting Cleveland ahead with less than four minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Browns held on for a 23-19 win, and with it, Watson bought himself more time.
Still, Cabot’s comments make clear that the leash may not be all that long if the next game goes sideways. A loss to Carolina could put Sanders back in the conversation, especially with the Browns facing a quick turnaround before their Week 4 home matchup against the rival Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct.
