The Carolina Panthers’ offensive line was already hanging by a thread. Now the one dependable piece up front is out too.
Damien Lewis, who has been the Panthers’ most reliable blocker this season, is expected to miss “a few weeks” with a UCL injury in his elbow, according to reports. He tried to play through the issue on Sunday, but the injury has since been identified as more serious, and Carolina’s best lineman is set to miss the game against the Lions. With a bye in Week 5, there’s at least a chance he only misses one game.
That’s the optimistic reading. The less comforting one is that the Panthers are still gathering medical opinions, and one report from Jeremy Fowler described it as a tear in the UCL, which would fall into the worst-case territory.
A source classified it as a “tear in his elbow” and said Lewis will get a second opinion. Another injury blow for Carolina.
The timeline is murky because the severity of the tear can swing wildly. Estimates range from three weeks to 12 months, and if surgery enters the picture, Lewis could be out until next training camp.
For Carolina, the timing couldn’t be worse. The Panthers have already lost Jaycee Horn for a substantial period, and more injuries could be on the way.
Up front, the situation has been rough all year. Bryce Young has been pressured more than any other quarterback, and the run game hasn’t gotten much help either.
Lewis was the one exception. Since signing in 2024, he has been a steady presence and the lone bright spot on a line that has otherwise struggled badly.
His guard partner Robert Hunt has had a rough season. Luke Fortner at center has also struggled.
With Taylor Moton and Ikem Ekwonu already dealing with injuries, Carolina has been forced to lean on other options that simply haven’t held up.
There is some hope that help is coming at tackle in the coming weeks, with Moton and Ekwonu eventually expected back. But that doesn’t solve the immediate issue at guard, and moving someone like Ekwonu inside would bring its own adjustment period, especially if that player is also returning to NFL action after time away.
Right now, the Panthers are staring at a line in bad shape and losing the one guy who had been keeping it from getting even uglier.
