The Chicago Bears opened the 2026 NFL season with a wild 59-37 win over the Carolina Panthers, and the offense did exactly what it needed to do in a shootout. But the other side of the ball left a lot to chew on.
Chicago’s defense allowed 37 points, and that number is hard to brush off after just one week. Dan Graziano of ESPN doesn’t think Bears fans are overreacting if they’re worried. In his view, the concern is real.
"The Bears are going to have to set the scoring record with the state of their defense... Verdict: NOT AN OVERREACTION," Graziano writes. "The concerns about Chicago's defense entering the season were legitimate."
That’s because this wasn’t a meltdown against an elite offense. Carolina is more of a middle-of-the-pack unit, and it still posted one of the strongest offensive performances of Week 1. The Bears gave up the third-most points in the NFL, behind the Panthers' defense, which Ben Johnson and company eviscerated, and the Indianapolis Colts ' defense, thanks to Lamar Jackson.
Bryce Young put up 361 passing yards and three touchdowns while throwing one interception and taking two sacks. The Panthers also ran it 22 times for 125 yards, good for 5.7 yards per carry.
That run defense number matters. If Chicago finds itself chasing games later in the season, giving up that kind of production on the ground makes comebacks a lot harder. More than half the yards needed for a first down on every carry is not a formula that inspires confidence.
And the warning signs were already there before Week 1. Coby Bryant’s injury, the departures of Jaquan Brisker and Kevin Byard in free agency, and the shaky defensive line depth all pointed to possible trouble.
One game is not enough to stamp this unit as one of the league’s worst. But it was enough to show the Bears’ defense can be a liability, and one that opposing teams may be able to target as the season goes on.
