Panthers Loss Exposed A Bigger Problem Than Bryce Young

In a tough game against the Buccaneers, the Panthers suffered both offensive and defensive woes, sparking questions about their ability to tackle and handle pressure effectively.

The Panthers’ afternoon in Tampa Bay went sideways fast, and by halftime the game was already buried under a 27-point hole. When a matchup gets that lopsided that early, the only real task is sorting through the wreckage.

There were a few bright spots buried in the mess, though not many. Bobby Okereke stood out on a defense that spent most of the day getting pushed around.

He piled up 7 tackles in the first quarter alone, tied for the most by a Panther in the opening quarter of a game since at least 2000 and the most since Frankie Luvu had 7 in Week 15, 2023. Okereke also came up with a couple of important third-down stops that helped Carolina get off the field in spots.

Even so, the Panthers had no answer for the Buccaneers on the ground. With Emeka Egbuka out and Baker Mayfield dealing with an injured thumb, Tampa Bay was always going to lean on the run and feed Bucky Irving.

Carolina still failed to have any real answer for it. Ejiro Evero’s defense either didn’t account for that plan or wasn’t ready to stop it, and the tackling was just as bad.

The special teams units didn’t help matters at all. David Moore, the Panthers’ “safe punt returner,” muffed a punt after Carolina had just come up with a stop, and Tampa Bay immediately turned that mistake into another score. Later, the Panthers had an extra point blocked and returned for two points, another crushing swing in a divisional game.

Moore’s miscues were part of a larger special teams mess, and the group never found anything close to stable footing. The blocked extra point came with Rasheed Walker involved, and he also got beat badly on a sack. Those plays kept adding up while Carolina tried and failed to hang around.

The offense had only a couple of plays worth remembering. Darren Waller’s 50-yard touchdown came on a terrific pass from Bryce Young and briefly gave Carolina a sliver of hope, even if that feeling disappeared on the extra point. Tre Tyus also found the end zone on a pitch that he followed into the score, and he contributed on special teams as well.

Chuba Hubbard wasn’t at his usual level, but with the game script working against him, he still managed to look pretty solid. Bryce Young, meanwhile, was put in a brutal spot once Carolina had to throw on nearly every snap behind a bad offensive line. It was a no-win setup, though it still qualified as his first dud of the year.

Robert Hunt’s rough season rolled on. He was beaten badly on a strip sack that was returned for a touchdown, another early knockout blow for Tampa Bay.

And then there was Brycen Tremayne, whose late drop summed up the day. On fourth and 1, Young put a perfect throw right in his hands with no defender making a play on the ball, but Tremayne bobbled it and dropped it. It was a simple catch Carolina needed in the worst way, and it slipped away.

Panthers Secondary Could Get A Huge Boost At The Right Time

Carolinas secondary may be getting some relief soon after spending two games without starting defensive backs Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson. Ahead of Week 7, head coach Dave Canales said both are recovering and moving in the right direction, a welcome update for a defense that has had to patch things together on the back end while waiting for its top corners to work back into the mix.

Horn is eager to keep progressing in his recovery, while Jackson has started to regain the speed and change-of-direction ability he needs to get back on the field. The Panthers could open their practice window in the coming weeks, which would at least give the team a better sense of how close it is to getting two important pieces back at a time when every bit of stability in the secondary matters. Panthers Defense Just Took Another Hit Before Buccaneers Game

The Panthers entered their matchup with Tampa Bay already dealing with a defense that has been patched together for weeks, and the latest inactive list only adds to the strain. Jaelan Phillips is out with a hamstring injury, while Thomas Incoom has been moved to injured reserve because of a calf issue, leaving Carolina to keep leaning on its next wave of depth.

Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson are still on injured reserve as they work back from significant injuries, which has made the secondary a constant juggling act. To help fill the gaps, Carolina elevated Nick Hampton and Robert Rochell from the practice squad and activated Bam Martin-Scott from injured reserve, another reminder of how thin the margin has become on that side of the ball. Bryce Young Just Changed What Panthers Fans Should Expect

The Panthers offense has looked like a different operation this season, with Carolina sitting near the top of the league in both production and scoring. Derrick Brown has seen enough up close to point to Brad Idzik and Bryce Young as two of the biggest reasons for the jump, and it is a notable shift for a team that has spent recent seasons trying to find any real offensive traction.

Brown also put a practical standard on where this group should be headed, saying the goal is to get to the second round of the playoffs. For a Carolina team that has spent a long time chasing stability, that kind of expectation says plenty about how much the offense has raised the bar and how much more the Panthers now believe is possible.
