The Panthers left Cleveland with more than a 21-18 loss. They also left with a long injury list and a pile of offensive problems that never really got solved.
After rolling past Atlanta 34-3 in Week 2, Carolina ran into a far tougher test Sunday at Huntington Bank Field. The Browns turned it into a grind, and the Panthers never found enough clean answers on either side of the ball.
Bryce Young was far less sharp than he’d been in his first two starts, finishing with just 6.1 yards per attempt. But the bigger issue was everything around him. Cleveland’s defense kept closing in, and Carolina’s passing game never settled in.
Denzel Ward shadowed Tetairoa McMillan, Jalen Coker left early with a quad issue, and Browns defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg kept sending pressure at a receiving group that couldn’t consistently win its matchups. Young was sacked three times, and one of those hits led to a foot injury.
The final snap from scrimmage summed up the afternoon. Derek Barnett got to Young’s throwing arm, the pass floated up, and safety Ronnie Hickman picked it off to seal the game.
Carolina also couldn’t get much going on the ground. Even with offensive coordinator Brad Idzik trying to lean on Chuba Hubbard, the Panthers never generated enough push to make the run game a reliable lifeline. Outside of their lone touchdown drive, the offense spent most of the day stuck.
The defense had its own trouble dealing with movement from the quarterback spot. In Week 1, the Panthers were burned by Caleb Williams and his legs in a 59-point loss to Chicago.
On Sunday, the damage came in smaller doses, but it still mattered. Deshaun Watson finished 16 of 30 for 144 yards, and much of his impact came when he escaped the pocket, including the eight-yard game-winning touchdown to Harold Fannin Jr.
Ejiro Evero’s group did create pressure and force Watson out of the pocket repeatedly. Still, as Dave Canales said after the game, the defense has to do a better job controlling its rush and keeping the quarterback contained.
The injuries made the afternoon even worse. Jalen Coker, Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson all left with issues - Coker with a quad injury, Horn with a quad injury and Jackson with a groin injury. Young and left guard Damien Lewis also appeared to work through setbacks just to finish the game.
Clearer updates on those players are expected this week, possibly starting Wednesday.
