The Carolina Panthers have changed course at quarterback.
Just a few weeks after Will Grier’s retirement, Carolina added another arm to the room on Wednesday, signing free agent Kyle Trask, according to multiple reports. The move comes after general manager Dan Morgan said last week there were “no plans” to bring in a fourth quarterback.
“No plans right now to bring a fourth guy on,” Morgan replied. “Obviously, wish Will and his family the best. In terms of his career, just playing as long as he did, and just wish him the best moving forward.”
That stance didn’t last long. Trask now joins a quarterback group headed by Bryce Young and backed up by Kenny Pickett and Haynes King.
The Panthers are in the second week of training camp, which started a little earlier because of the extra preseason game, and the early days have already been rough. The issue hasn’t been the on-field work so much as the injuries piling up in practice. A wide receiver was the latest player to go down on Wednesday, adding to a growing list of setbacks.
Grier’s retirement before camp had initially left Carolina appearing content to carry three quarterbacks. Instead, Trask gives the Panthers another option and a chance to sort out the backup spot behind Young.
Trask arrives with a football résumé that includes a strong run at Florida and a second-round selection by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He made his NFL debut in Week 18 of the 2022 season against the Atlanta Falcons, going 3 of 9 for 23 yards.
