Panthers Head Into Denver Seriously Shorthanded On Both Sides

Deck: In a critical blow to their Week 9 matchup against the Broncos, the Panthers will be missing key defensive figures Jaelan Phillips, Damien Lewis, Bobby Okereke, and Will Lee.

The Panthers will be short-handed again in Week 9, and this time the list is a painful one. Carolina announced that OLB Jaelan Phillips, G Damien Lewis, LB Bobby Okereke and CB Will Lee have all been ruled out for Sunday’s matchup with the Broncos.

That means the Panthers are heading into the game without three defensive starters and their starting left guard, a hit that leaves the lineup thinner on both sides of the ball.

Phillips has been working through a lingering hamstring issue and has missed the last three weeks. The 26-year-old was a one-year starter at Miami and earned second-team All-ACC honors in 2020. The Dolphins took him with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2021 draft.

He was in the fourth year of his four-year, $14,018,203 deal with Miami, which included a $7,555,057 signing bonus, when the team picked up his fifth-year option worth $13.251 million fully guaranteed for the 2025 season. Miami later moved him before the midseason deadline to the Eagles for a third-round pick, and Carolina signed him last offseason to a four-year, $120 million contract.

In 2026, Phillips has played in five games for the Panthers and posted 10 tackles, two tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Okereke is another notable absence. The 30-year-old was a third-round pick by the Colts out of Stanford in 2019 and finished the final year of his four-year, $3,403,116 rookie contract, which included an $883,113 signing bonus. He reached unrestricted free agency for the first time in his career before agreeing to a four-year, $40 million deal with the Giants that included $22 million guaranteed ahead of the 2023 season.

New York released Okereke in March, and he signed with Carolina in August. This season, he has appeared in seven games and recorded 49 tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, five pass defenses, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Panthers May Finally Shake Up The Line In Front Of Bryce Young

Carolinas protection issues have become impossible to ignore, and Dave Canales said the team is weighing changes up front after a rough stretch for the offensive line. The Panthers have been forced to absorb more pressure than any team in the league at multiple spots along the line, a problem that has made life far more difficult for Bryce Young and the offense as a whole.

One possible answer is Brady Christensen, who was designated to return from a hamstring injury and has been a full participant in recent practices. The sixth-year veteran has not yet made his regular-season debut, but his return gives Carolina another option as it tries to stabilize a unit that has struggled to hold up and may be due for a shakeup soon. Panthers Trade Deadline Debate Comes Down To One Tough Decision

The trade deadline has a way of forcing front offices to choose between urgency and patience, and for the Panthers, the conversation is already centered on where the biggest upgrade might come from. Cornerback and edge rusher remain the obvious areas to watch, which is why the names floating around the league have such different levels of appeal. Some potential targets fit the roster need cleanly, while others are tied up by cost, team control or simple trade logic that makes them far less realistic than they sound on paper.

Riq Woolen, Josh Downs, Damien Lewis, Josh Sweat and Vita Vea all surface for different reasons, but not every fit is created equal. Connections matter, positional value matters and so does the reality of whether another team would even consider moving a player the Panthers could use right now. For Carolina, the real challenge is sorting through the plausible options from the long shots, because the deadline usually rewards the team that knows when to push and when to walk away. Panthers Trade Deadline Reality Just Got More Complicated

With injuries thinning the roster and salary cap room already tight, the Panthers are heading toward the trade deadline with a familiar problem: they need help in a few spots, but there is no easy way to get it. ESPNs Mike Kaye pointed to three names that fit the conversation, including Raiders offensive lineman Jackson Powers-Johnson, Chargers running back Kimani Vidal and Jets pass rusher Will McDonald IV, all of whom would address areas where Carolina could use more depth.

The challenge is figuring out whether any of those possibilities can actually become realistic for a team that has to balance immediate needs against long-term flexibility. Offensive line, running back and pass rush remain the obvious places to look, but with no confirmed deal yet, the Panthers are left weighing how aggressive they can be before the deadline arrives.
