The Panthers don’t walk into this matchup as the same kind of long shot they were the last time they saw the Eagles.
Back then, Carolina was 3-9 and Philadelphia was 10-2 with an eight-game win streak behind it. Even so, the Bryce Young-led Panthers made it uncomfortable.
Young nearly turned a bad situation into something magical when he escaped what looked like a possible safety, got his shirt ripped in the process, and still found a way to complete a pass. He later guided Carolina down the field in the closing moments of a one-score game, and with less than a minute left he put Xavier Legette in position to steal it with a deep ball over the middle.
Legette couldn’t haul it in, the ball hit the turf, and the Panthers eventually turned it over on downs and lost.
This time around, the records and the mood have flipped in Carolina’s favor. The Panthers are the team with the better record, while the Eagles arrive at 2-3 and in a rough stretch after three straight losses. Philadelphia has also been dealing with major changes up front, with an all-time great right tackle suddenly announcing his retirement a couple weeks ago and the team then trading longtime starting center Cam Jurgens.
Carolina also comes in with a little momentum of its own after holding up well in its matchups against the Lions and riding that into an electrifying Sunday Night Football win. The individual battles inside this game should decide plenty.
One of the biggest trenches matchups belongs to Derrick Brown against Tyler Steen and Markel Bell. Philadelphia’s line has long been a strength, but this season the Eagles are scraping for answers.
Bell has had to step in after Lane Johnson’s retirement, and the drop-off is obvious. Steen has been fine at right guard, though he was banged up last week and was limited in practice to open the week.
Brown has been quiet so far this season, but the Eagles’ weaker right side looks like the place for him to break out and disrupt an offense that has already had its share of issues.
Another key chess piece is Devin Lloyd against Dallas Goedert. Goedert led the Eagles in targets against the Jaguars last week because so many of Philadelphia’s top skill players were hurt.
With Saquon Barkley and Devonta Smith both questionable again, there’s a real chance Goedert is still the most dependable option Jalen Hurts has. He lives in the short areas of the field, and Lloyd has been excellent in coverage when he’s on the field, after whatever happened in Week 1.
If Lloyd can erase Goedert, he takes away Hurts’ safety valve and forces the Eagles offense to work a lot harder.
On the other side, Tetairoa McMillan has the spotlight after the best game of his life on Sunday Night Football. He caught 14 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns against a very bad Lions defense, but the challenge gets much tougher here.
Quinyon Mitchell has been one of the league’s better corners almost from the moment he arrived in 2024. Jalen Coker is back, which should help spread some defensive attention around, but Carolina is still going to need McMillan to win some one-on-one battles against Mitchell to unlock everything else.
There’s also a heavyweight matchup inside between Robert Hunt and Jalen Carter. Philadelphia’s defense has been carrying the team while the offense sputters, and Carter is a huge reason why.
He leads the Eagles with three sacks in five games, an eye-popping number for an interior lineman, and he just put together a dominant outing against the Jaguars with two of those sacks and 1.5 run stuffs. Hunt and the rest of the Panthers’ interior line will have to account for him, but Hunt is the one most likely to shoulder the load.
He’s been a little shaky this season and will need to rediscover the form he’s shown in previous years if Carolina wants to keep Carter under control.
Then there’s the odd wrinkle of the Eagles coming off London. The trip across six time zones doesn’t automatically mean disaster anymore in the NFL’s world of constant international travel, but it still matters when a team is asked to play early in the morning for its body clock. Philadelphia also had the sting of losing in heartbreaking fashion before making the long flight home, so it’s fair to wonder whether any of that shows up once the game starts back on U.S. soil.

Panthers Suddenly Catch A Huge Break Before Eagles Showdown
The Panthers were already facing a difficult trip to Philadelphia, but Sundays matchup now comes with a major twist. Jalen Hurts, the Eagles starting quarterback, will miss the game after a superficial blood clot was found in his calf during an ultrasound, and the teams medical staff is keeping him out while they decide on the right treatment plan.
For Carolina, the change reshapes the challenge in a hurry. Philadelphia will have to turn to one of its backup options, Tanner McKee or Cole Payton, and that creates a very different look for a game the Panthers needed every break they could get. Even with Hurts unavailable, the task in front of Carolina does not get easy, but the path to an upset just became a little less steep. [Read more 🡒]
Panthers Just Got Pulled Into A Dangerous Justin Herbert Debate
The idea of Justin Herbert becoming available is the kind of quarterback talk that can instantly pull another team into the conversation, and the Panthers have not been spared. With Bryce Young still trying to establish himself as Carolinas long-term answer, any rumor tying the Chargers star to the market naturally sends attention toward Charlotte, where quarterback stability has been a central issue and every big-name possibility gets measured against the current plan.
Herberts performance, contract status and the Chargers needs all make this more than idle speculation, but the Panthers angle is what keeps the debate alive. If a trade ever moved past the hypothetical stage, Young would almost certainly become part of the discussion, turning a leaguewide rumor into a franchise-defining decision for Carolina. For now, though, it remains exactly that, a debate with plenty of intrigue and no confirmation behind it. [Read more 🡒]
Panthers Face A Very Different Eagles Challenge After Jalen Hurts News
The Panthers were already preparing for one of the leagues toughest road tests, and now the matchup in Philadelphia has taken a sharp turn. Jalen Hurts has been ruled out for the Eagles because of a superficial blood clot, a development that changes the look of a game Carolina had been expecting to navigate against one of the NFLs most physical and balanced offenses.
Hurts was initially thought to be dealing with a calf injury, but further testing found the clot, and a follow-up ultrasound showed movement that led the team to hold him out for safety. Philadelphia is focusing on his health and figuring out the right treatment plan, which leaves Carolina facing a very different kind of challenge than the one it spent the week preparing for.
