The Carolina Panthers are heading into their preseason finale Friday night against the Houston Texans with something a little different to point to: a 2-1 summer mark. That’s a notable change for a team that went just 1-8 combined in preseason play over the previous three years.
But the bigger question hanging over Carolina for 2026 isn’t Bryce Young. It’s the offensive line in front of him.
Late last week, before the Panthers’ 34-17 win at Jacksonville, Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus laid out the biggest concern for all 32 teams entering the season. For Carolina, the issue was obvious.
“The Panthers are currently without both starting offensive tackles” explained McGuinness. “Left tackle Ikem Ekwonu suffered a ruptured patellar tendon in the wild-card loss to the Rams, while right tackle Taylor Moton is sidelined with blood clots. It remains unclear when either will return in 2026, but both appear likely to miss at least the start of the season.
That’s a tough blow for a pair of linemen who have been pillars for the franchise. Ekwonu, the sixth overall pick in the 2022 draft out of North Carolina State, has played and started 65 of a possible 69 games, including that playoff meeting with Sean McVay’s Rams.
Moton’s run has been even more durable. The former second-round pick from Western Michigan in 2017 played all 16 regular-season games and a postseason contest as a rookie, even without a start.
Since 2018, he has opened 129 of the team’s 130 games. Ekwonu’s status has been uncertain since mid-January, while Moton’s medical issues became public in June.
Carolina general manager Dan Morgan had already started preparing for life without Ekwonu this offseason. He brought in four-year veteran Rasheed Walker from the Packers in free agency and used the 19th overall pick in April on Georgia tackle Monroe Freeling.
“Walker earned a 69.3 PFF pass-blocking grade in 2025,” added McGuinness, “while Freeling was one of college football’s top pass protectors, allowing just two pressures on 469 pass-blocking snaps. Still, losing both starting tackles is a significant concern, and for all of Freeling’s potential, he has yet to play an NFL snap.”
Freeling hasn’t been on the field every week this preseason. He did not play against the Arizona Cardinals in the Hall of Fame Game, then logged 10 offensive snaps in the loss at Buffalo. Against Jacksonville, he was back in the starting lineup and took 13 offensive snaps, plus one on special teams.
For now, Bryce Young is set to work behind a very different offensive front than the one he’s had over his first three years in Carolina. That group includes a new center, too.

The Panthers have spent the last two seasons trying to move past the disappointment of 2023, and on paper there is at least a case that the turnaround is real. But ESPNs 2026 positional rankings paint a far less flattering picture, with Carolina sitting near the bottom overall and drawing especially weak marks at running back, wide receiver, tight end, offensive line and edge rusher. Injuries have played a part, and the teams recent high-profile signings and draft picks have not yet lifted those areas the way the Panthers likely hoped, leaving the roster progress suddenly a lot more debatable than the division title might suggest. Panthers May Have More Than Stability At Kicker This Season
Ryan Fitzgerald will open the season as the Panthers Week 1 kicker, and for once theres no late-summer battle hanging over the job. After a rookie year that gave Carolina reason to believe it had found some stability at the position, Fitzgerald has carried that momentum into training camp with a strong showing in practice, nailing kicks from a range of distances and looking like a player the staff can trust.
What has stood out to Dave Canales and special teams coordinator Tracy Smith is not just the accuracy, but the way Fitzgerald has handled the offseason push to get stronger and more explosive. Carolina asked him to make those improvements, and he has followed through while also showing the kind of mental growth that can matter just as much for a kicker.
