Panthers Had A Few Bright Spots In A Loss That Got Worse

In a lopsided loss to the Buccaneers, key Panthers players were graded by PFF, revealing standout performances alongside glaring weaknesses.

The Carolina Panthers got flattened in Week 7, and the Pro Football Focus numbers tell the same story as the scoreboard.

Tampa Bay rolled into Bank of America Stadium on Sunday and left with a 43-13 win, powered by 258 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground. The Buccaneers, who came in at 1-5 and banged up, controlled the game from start to finish and kept Carolina’s offense from ever finding a rhythm.

If there was any silver lining in the wreckage, it came in a few individual grade lines - but not many.

On offense, left guard Damien Lewis posted the Panthers’ best PFF mark at 80.2. Right tackle Taylor Moton followed at 77.7 before leaving with ankle and fibula injuries.

Moton did not allow a pressure on 16 opportunities, and his 79.6 pass-blocking grade was the best on the unit. Running back Chuba Hubbard checked in at 75.7, while center/left guard Corey Bullock earned a 74.2 after entering in garbage time and putting up a team-best 80.6 run-blocking grade.

Quarterback Kenny Pickett rounded out the top five at 71.5.

The lower end of the offensive chart was rough. Tight end Tommy Tremble came in at 52.7, wide receiver Jalen Coker at 51.7, and right tackle Monroe Freeling at 45.6.

Left guard Torricelli Simpkins III registered a 39.8, while Brycen Tremayne finished at 39.0. Coker was held to one catch for nine yards on four targets, and Tremayne was charged with Carolina’s only drop, a mistake that ended in a turnover on downs.

Defensively, Derrick Brown led the way with a 79.6 grade and also posted a team-high 79.1 in run defense. He finished with five tackles and two stops. Bobby Brown III landed at 74.3, followed by cornerback Will Lee III at 70.2, edge rusher Princely Umanmielen at 69.1 and safety Zakee Wheatley at 66.3.

The bottom of the defensive list was much uglier. Trevis Gipson graded at 48.3, Nick Hampton and Bobby Okereke each came in at 40.9, Tershawn Wharton finished at 40.7 and Akayleb Evans was the lowest at 29.4.

Evans had a brutal day against Baker Mayfield, who attempted only 11 passes but completed seven for 64 yards and a touchdown. Evans was on the hook for two of those catches, 33 of those yards and the score, with a 143.1 passer rating when targeted.

Panthers Defense Has Become Carolinas Biggest Playoff Roadblock

The Panthers have spent most of the season trying to pair a playoff-caliber offense with a defense that has too often made things harder than they need to be. Under Ejiro Evero, the group has shown flashes, but the bigger picture has been uneven, with game planning, in-game adjustments and tackling all coming under scrutiny as the team has searched for something closer to a reliable standard on that side of the ball.

Injuries have certainly played a role, but they have not explained everything. For Carolina, the frustration is that the defensive issues feel larger than a patchwork lineup, and that leaves the Panthers in a familiar spot of having enough offensive talent to matter while still carrying a defense that keeps putting the season in danger. Panthers Have A Cornerback Problem They Shouldn't Wait To Fix

The Panthers are still waiting on help at cornerback, even with Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson expected back from injuries in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Carolina is leaning on thin depth at one of the most vulnerable spots on the roster, with Robert Rochell giving the secondary some support after being elevated from the practice squad.

For a team trying to protect itself from another setback, the concern is less about the immediate return of two starters and more about what happens if the timeline shifts again. The Panthers have already felt how quickly cornerback depth can disappear, and the longer they go without another body there, the more exposed they stay if either Horn or Jackson is not ready or gets nicked up again. Panthers Suddenly Face A Brutal O-Line Problem At 3-3

The Panthers offensive line took a major hit coming out of the loss to Tampa Bay, and it leaves Carolina scrambling at a spot that has been steady for much of the season. Right tackle Taylor Moton was placed on injured reserve after suffering a fractured fibula during the game, a blow that lands at a tough time for a team sitting at 3-3 and trying to keep its footing in a crowded NFC race.

Bryce Young addressed both Motons injury and the overall rough showing against the Buccaneers, a reminder that the issues in front of him went well beyond one play. Now the Panthers turn quickly to Green Bay in Week 8 with a suddenly shakier line and a familiar question: how well can they protect their quarterback while trying to stop the slide? [Read more 🡒]
