Panthers Finally Get Two Key Linemen Back In A Crucial Stretch

The Panthers make a strategic move as key players Tershawn Wharton and Taylor Moton are set to return to practice, adding depth and experience to their lineup.

The Panthers are getting two important linemen back into the mix, with head coach Dave Canales saying Tuesday that Carolina is designating defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton and right tackle Taylor Moton to return to practice, according to Alex Zietlow.

That move opens a 21-day window for both players. During that span, they can practice and must be activated to the 53-man roster, or else they’ll go back to the PUP/NFI lists for the rest of the year.

Wharton had been on the PUP list after undergoing neck surgery in May. Moton landed on the NFI list in June because of a blood clot in his left lung.

Wharton, 28, arrived in the league as an undrafted free agent with the Chiefs after the 2020 NFL Draft out of Missouri S&T. He stuck on the roster in each of his first three seasons and then re-signed with Kansas City on one-year deals in back-to-back years before moving on to Carolina on a three-year, $54 million contract in 2025.

In nine games for the Panthers in 2025, Wharton put up 36 tackles, two sacks and a pass defense.

Moton, 31, has been a long-time piece for Carolina since the team took him in the second round out of Western Michigan in 2017. After finishing his four-year, $4.158 million rookie deal, he was headed for unrestricted free agency before the Panthers used the franchise tag on him in 2021 and later signed him to a four-year, $72 million contract.

His deal has been reworked several times over the years, and he eventually re-signed with Carolina before last season on a two-year, $44 million extension through 2027.

In 2025, Moton played in 16 games and started 15 at right tackle.

Bryce Youngs Rise Just Sent Panthers Fan Excitement To Another Level

Bryce Youngs strong start has done more than give the Panthers a reason to feel better about the present. After a 329-yard, two-touchdown performance on Sunday Night Football, he was sitting atop the NFL in passing yards after Week Four, and that surge has quickly spilled beyond the field. His recent public appearance at the grand opening of the New Dicks House of Sport store in Raleigh drew a crowd of fans eager for autographs and photos, a reminder of how quickly the mood around a franchise can shift when its young quarterback starts looking the part.

Young also gave a little more window into the mindset behind the rise during an interview, sharing a childhood story about meeting Kobe Bryant and how it shaped his work ethic and his view of giving back. For Panthers fans, that combination of production and personality is part of what has the excitement building. It is one thing to stack numbers early, but Young is also giving the fan base reasons to believe the momentum could mean something bigger than a hot opening month. [Read more 🡒]

Panthers Finally Have Injury Hope With One Big Week 6 Catch

Jalen Cokers return could be one of the more timely developments for a Carolina offense that has been waiting for a little more stability. Dave Canales said the wide receiver is on track to come back from a quadriceps injury for Week 6, though his status still depends on how he looks in the coming practices. With the Panthers sitting atop the NFC South at 2-2, any healthy reinforcements matter, especially for a roster trying to keep pace in a division that has not offered much separation.

There is more movement beyond Coker, too. Offensive tackle Taylor Moton and defensive lineman Turk Wharton have had their practice windows opened, a sign that both are starting to trend in the right direction after their injuries. Carolina has spent enough time managing absences already, so getting multiple starters and rotation pieces back into the mix could help the Panthers sort out both sides of the ball as the schedule tightens. Panthers Bye Week Suddenly Put Real Pressure On What Comes Next

The bye week could not have lined up much better for Carolina. While the Panthers were idle, division rivals New Orleans and Atlanta both lost, giving Carolina a cleaner path in the NFC South and a little more breathing room in the race. The pause also came at a useful time for a roster that has been working through injuries, with Jaelan Phillips, Monroe Freeling and Jalen Coker all expected back soon and a few more players still with a chance to join them.

There is still a real test waiting when the Panthers come back, though, and it is not just about health. Carolinas Super Bowl odds and power ranking both ticked up during the break, helped by the results around the division and by the struggles of the next opponent, the Philadelphia Eagles. The bye gave the Panthers a better-looking picture on paper, but the pressure now shifts to what they do with it once the games resume. [Read more 🡒]
