The Panthers’ latest rise in the NFL power rankings comes with a catch: they’re climbing fast, but they’re also about to sit still.
After opening the season at No. 27 in Nick Shook’s NFL.com rankings, Carolina had already moved up to No. 22 before last week’s games. Then came Sunday night’s 32-26 win over the visiting Detroit Lions, and Shook pushed the Panthers all the way to 14th.
“After a rough Week 3 showing, Bryce Young returned to top form, carving up Detroit’s defense for 329 passing yards and two touchdowns. Chuba Hubbard did his part, too, finishing with 122 rushing yards and two TDs, while Tetairoa McMillan produced a career night, catching 14 passes for 192 yards and two scores. That’s an explosive offense, folks.”
That’s the story of Carolina right now: production, and plenty of it. The Panthers are one of only three teams in the league with more total yards, and they lead the NFL in passing yards per game.
Through four games, they’ve put up 121 points, which ranks fourth in the league. At 2-2, they’re also off to their best start since opening 3-1 in 201.
Shook also pointed out that the Panthers delivered their most impressive win of the year while missing several key players, including WR2 Jalen Coker, which only added to the weight of the result.
The jump up the rankings was big, but not quite the biggest of the week. That honor belonged to the New England Patriots, who vaulted from 31st to 18th after beating the Bills 29-26 in Buffalo. The Panthers were part of a group that also included the Falcons, who climbed eight spots as well.
Atlanta’s surge has come with Michael Penix Jr. back at quarterback. After dropping to 0-2 and getting blown out 34-4 at home by Carolina in Week 2, the Falcons have rebounded with road wins over the Packers, 35-14, and the Saints, 45-24, to even their record. Kevin Stefanski’s team has now scored 80 points across those two games.
Carolina won’t get another chance to change Shook’s numbers immediately. The Panthers, along with the Kansas City Chiefs, are off in Week 6.

Bryce Young Has Changed Carolina's Biggest Long Term Question
The Panthers head into their bye week at 2-2 and in first place in the NFC South, with Bryce Young giving the organization something it has not had in a while: a reason to think long term without immediate hesitation. His early-season play has not just steadied the offense, it has shifted the conversation around the franchises biggest decision, because a quarterback who looks like this changes the timeline on everything that comes next.
Princely Umanmielen has created a similar kind of momentum on the other side of the ball, stepping into a larger role as a pass rusher and making it matter while Jaelan Phillips is injured. The Panthers still have plenty to sort out over the stretch run, but the combination of Youngs rise and Umanmielens emergence is giving this team a much sturdier foundation than it had a month ago. Tyler Shough Knows Saints Fans Have Every Reason To Be Frustrated
The NFC South is already doing what it always seems to do this time of year, mixing quarterback questions, injury updates and plenty of frustration. Falcons safety Jessie Bates said Atlanta looks different when Michael Penix Jr. is on the field, while Panthers coach Dave Canales spent part of his Week 5 availability defending cornerback Akayleb Evans after some costly plays and running through the latest injury statuses for his roster.
For Carolina, the broader picture still matters because the division keeps shifting around the quarterback spot, and Saints rookie Tyler Shough is now the latest voice acknowledging how quickly fan patience can wear thin after a loss to Atlanta. He also pointed to the importance of crowd energy in the games ahead, a reminder that the mood inside the dome can still travel with a team even when the results on the field are hard to take. Panthers Offense Could Get A Timely Boost Before Eagles Test
The Panthers head into their Week 5 bye with a chance to come out of it looking a little healthier on offense, which matters with the Eagles waiting in Week 6. Carolina has been hoping to get wide receiver Jalen Coker back after he missed time with an injury, and any reinforcements would be welcome for an attack still trying to find its rhythm.
Dave Canales also said running back Trevor Etienne will definitely be back after the break, giving the Panthers at least one clear addition before the next stretch begins. The bigger question is whether Coker can join him, because adding another option to the passing game would come at just the right time before Carolina takes on one of the leagues tougher matchups.
