The Carolina Panthers didn’t need long to make life uncomfortable for the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2.
From the opening snap at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Carolina was punching at the football, taking advantage of mistakes, and building a lead before Atlanta could settle in. Rookie safety Zakee Wheatley forced the game’s first turnover on the very first play from scrimmage, knocking the ball loose as Falcons quarterback Cooper Rush scrambled. Veteran safety Nick Scott recovered, and the Panthers were suddenly in business at Atlanta’s 34-yard line with 14:30 left in the first quarter.
That quick strike of momentum turned into points just a few snaps later. On fourth-and-goal from the Falcons’ 3-yard line, Bryce Young hit running back Chuba Hubbard for a touchdown to put Carolina ahead 7-0 with 10:48 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Panthers kept the pressure on from there. After a tipped pass led to another takeaway, linebacker Bobby Okereke came down with the interception off a deflection by Devin Lloyd, giving Carolina the ball at its own 44 with 8:59 left in the first quarter.
Carolina turned that edge into more points on the next scoring sequence. Jalen Coker ripped off a 36-yard punt return to set the Panthers up at the Falcons’ 29-yard line, and although the drive stalled after six plays and just 10 yards, Ryan Fitzgerald drilled a 37-yard field goal to make it 10-0 with 4:29 left in the first.
Atlanta finally put together a response before halftime, but Carolina kept answering. The Falcons marched 13 plays for 65 yards and got on the board with a 41-yard Nick Folk field goal, cutting it to 13-3 with 1:07 left in the second quarter.
Before that, though, Carolina had already padded the lead. Fitzgerald added a 25-yard field goal after catches of 27 yards by Tetairoa McMillan and 25 yards by Coker, pushing the margin to 13-0 with 5:54 remaining in the half.
The Panthers weren’t done. Devin Lloyd later picked up his first sack as a Panther, finishing Atlanta’s drive and bringing his tackle total to seven on the afternoon. Carolina then took over from the Falcons’ 31-yard line with 9:30 left in the half.
Then came the drive that stretched the lead even further. Bryce Young connected with tight end Darren Waller for a 7-yard touchdown, Waller’s first with the Panthers.
Xavier Legette helped set it up with a 64-yard reception earlier in the possession. That made it 20-3 with 20 seconds left before halftime.
The game kicked off Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. ET from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
FOX carried the broadcast, with Tim Brando on play-by-play, Matt Millen as color analyst and Sarah Kustok reporting from the sideline. Streaming options included FOX’s streaming service, YouTube’s NFL Sunday Ticket and Fubo.
Carolina entered the matchup coming off a Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears, 59-37, after being part of the highest-scoring Week 1 game in NFL history. The Panthers’ 2026 schedule also includes trips to Cleveland, Philadelphia, Green Bay, New Orleans, Minnesota and Pittsburgh, plus home dates against Detroit, Tampa Bay, Denver, Baltimore, Cincinnati and Seattle.

Panthers Face A Tough Defensive Test With Week 2 Inactives Set
The Panthers head into their Week 2 matchup with Atlanta already having to sort through a familiar kind of early-season roster shuffle. Bobby Brown III and Pat Jones are among the inactive players, joining Ja'Tavion Sanders, Haynes King, Chau Smith-Wade, Tyrel Dodson and Albert Reese on the sideline as Carolina trims down to its game-day group.
There is some good news in the mix, though, with Jalen Coker cleared to play after working back from an ankle injury. In a game that will put Carolinas defense under an immediate test, the availability of key depth pieces could matter just as much as the names missing from the list, especially with a divisional opponent waiting and no shortage of pressure on the Panthers to hold up on that side of the ball. Panthers Could Catch Another Opponent In A QB Shakeup
The Panthers are about to run into a familiar NFL theme at exactly the wrong time for opponents, with Atlanta set to start Cooper Rush because of injuries to Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa. It is the kind of shifting quarterback landscape that can change a game plan in a hurry, and Carolina has already been handed one version of that challenge as it prepares for the Falcons.
A different kind of uncertainty is brewing on the Panthers' next stop as well, with Cleveland reportedly considering a quarterback change for Week 3. Deshaun Watson is currently the starter, but the Browns may turn to Shedeur Sanders, who started seven games as a rookie and could be benefiting from a new coaching staff, leaving Carolina to monitor yet another opponent whose offensive identity is still very much in flux.
