The Panthers will be without a few notable pieces when they face the Falcons, and the biggest hits come on defense.
Carolina listed OLB Pat Jones, TE Ja'Tavion Sanders, QB Haynes King as the emergency third quarterback, CB Chau Smith-Wade, LB Tyrel Dodson, OT Albert Reese and DT Bobby Brown as inactive.
Bobby Brown III had already been ruled out, but that absence, paired with Pat Jones sitting out, is the part that stings most. Brown was the Panthers’ top-graded defender last week by a wide margin, according to PFF, so even with the expectation that Derrick Brown and others will play better, losing him is still a major setback.
Jones missed last week too, and Carolina felt it. Princely Umanmielen has been starting in his place, but he’s mostly a pass-rush specialist and doesn’t hold up well against the run.
That matters here, even if the QB containment burden won’t be quite as severe against Cooper Rush as it would have been against Caleb Williams, because Tua Tagovailoa was just ruled out. Still, the Panthers would rather not be short an edge-setter with Bijan Robinson on the other side.
There are a few other lineup wrinkles worth watching. Chau Smith-Wade is a nickel corner, which suggests Carolina expects a run-heavy game and may lean on Jaycee Horn in the slot again to cover for his absence.
Tyrel Dodson is also out after being added to the main roster and taking Jimmy Horn Jr.’s spot when Horn was waived. That raises a simple question: did the Panthers need defensive help, or not?
They also need answers in the return game, where Horn had handled kicks poorly. Now Carolina is on its third return man after Horn was waived and Trevor Etienne landed on IR.
Dodson could have helped at linebacker in slowing Bijan Robinson, but the Panthers appear comfortable with their linebacker group after an ugly opening-week defensive performance.
There is at least some good news for Carolina. Jalen Coker, who was dealing with an ankle injury this week, is active and ready to go. And with Brown III out, the rest of the defensive front is intact, with Cam Jackson in after being a healthy scratch last week.
