Panthers Face A Few Matchups That Could Decide Everything In Philly

Can the Panthers capitalize on the Eagles' injury woes and string of losses in this pivotal Week 6 matchup?

The Panthers get back to work after their early bye with a trip to Philadelphia, and they’re walking into a dangerous spot. The Eagles have been hammered by injuries and have dropped three straight, but Carolina still can’t treat this like anything close to a soft landing.

If the Panthers are going to leave Week 6 with a win, they’ll need to handle a few critical one-on-one battles. Here are the four matchups that could shape the afternoon.

The biggest test lands on Panthers right guard Robert Hunt, who’s tasked with trying to slow down Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter. Hunt has a 58.9 pass-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus so far, and Carter has been wrecking games with 3.0 sacks, five tackles for loss and a league-high three forced fumbles. Keeping Carter away from quarterback Bryce Young has to be a priority if Carolina wants to avoid trouble in the pocket.

On the outside, Panthers receiver Tetairoa McMillan could be in for a very different kind of challenge. After doing his damage in the slot, he may be back on the boundary with Jalen Coker returning, and that would put him across from Eagles cornerback Riq Woolen.

Woolen stands 6-foot-4 and can match McMillan’s size, but the coverage numbers have not been kind to him: two touchdowns allowed and a 109.3 passer rating in coverage, a career-worst for the former Seattle Seahawk. McMillan is coming off the best outing of his career, with 14 catches, 192 yards and two touchdowns against the Detroit Lions.

Another receiver matchup to watch is Jalen Coker against Eagles defensive back Cooper DeJean. DeJean is the other obvious threat after Carter, and he can line up anywhere, including in the slot, where Coker is expected to spend time as he returns from a quad injury.

Coker has been productive in limited action, with 18 catches, 222 yards and two touchdowns in two and a half games. DeJean has given up two touchdowns and a 93.1 passer rating.

The last key battle comes with Panthers linebacker Bobby Okereke handling Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert. Goedert’s résumé is loaded: 420 catches, nearly 5,000 receiving yards and 37 touchdowns in 111 NFL games, including a career-best 11 scores in 2025.

With Jalen Hurts out, he could be a frequent outlet for backup Tanner McKee. Okereke has to track him in coverage, where he has allowed a 64.3-percent completion rate and a 65.5 passer rating.

Panthers Fans Have One Eagles Player To Watch Very Closely

As the Panthers continue sorting out where their roster still needs help, one familiar Eagles opponent is worth keeping a close eye on. Jimmy Kempski of Philly Voice looked at Philadelphias potential trade candidates and pointed to three names that could make sense for Carolina, with cornerback Riq Woolen emerging as the most obvious fit given the Panthers current needs.

Dan Morgan and his staff are expected to use the upcoming game to take a hard look at the Eagles roster, which only adds to the intrigue around Woolen. Dallas Goedert and Landon Dickerson are also on the list, but the Panthers focus appears more likely to land on the defensive backfield as they weigh where a move could help most. [Read more 🡒]

Panthers Could Get 3 Key Pieces Back Right Before Eagles Game

The Panthers got a timely boost this week when Trevor Etienne, Taylor Moton and Tershawn Wharton were all designated to return to practice, giving Carolina a chance to strengthen three important spots before facing the Eagles. Each player was a full participant in Fridays session, and all three are listed as questionable heading into the matchup, a welcome development for a team trying to get healthier at the right time.

Dave Canales said Etienne is expected to be activated to the roster, while Moton and Wharton could also be back in the lineup. For Carolina, the real question now is how much of that trio will be available when the game kicks off, and whether the Panthers can turn a promising practice week into a meaningful boost against one of the leagues tougher opponents. Bryce Young Is Chasing Rare Company Against The Eagles

Bryce Young has quietly put himself in some unusual company to open the season, stringing together four straight games with at least 280 passing yards and a touchdown. For a Panthers offense that has spent plenty of recent Sundays searching for traction, Youngs early run has given Carolina a real reason to pay attention every week, and it has also put him on the doorstep of a mark that has been in the conversation for years.

Philadelphia is next, and with it comes a chance for Young to keep climbing into territory reserved for the game's most prolific starts. He leads the league in passing yards per game right now, and while the record he is chasing belongs to Drew Brees, the bigger picture is even more striking if this stretch holds. The Panthers have been waiting for a steady offensive pulse, and Young is suddenly carrying the sort of momentum that can turn a hot first month into something much more meaningful. [Read more 🡒]
