Panthers Eye Surprising First Round Draft Move

Panthers eye unexpected first-round pick as they weigh pressing roster needs against future planning.

The Carolina Panthers certainly turned heads this past season, capturing the NFC South and giving the Los Angeles Rams a real run for their money in the Wild Card Round. But despite their success, the Panthers still have some roster gaps that need attention.

While Carolina made some strides in free agency, the NFL Draft presents another opportunity to bolster their lineup. However, there's some buzz around a rather unconventional draft prediction.

In a recent mock draft by Jordan Plocher from Pro Football Focus, the Panthers are projected to select Clemson offensive tackle Blake Miller with the 19th overall pick. Miller's resume is impressive-he's a four-year starter at right tackle for the Tigers, showing consistent improvement every season.

His 2025 performance was highlighted by a 78.5 overall grade and an 83.5 pass-blocking grade from PFF. Over 529 pass-blocking snaps, Miller allowed just two sacks, two quarterback hits, and 10 hurries, making him a valuable asset for depth and a potential future starter once Taylor Moton moves on.

Despite Miller's rise in draft stock, this choice raises eyebrows. Just a month ago, he was considered a mid-Day 2 pick, and with Carolina signing Rasheed Walker to a one-year deal, the tackle position seems secure for now with Walker and Moton holding down the fort.

While it's wise for the Panthers to plan for Moton's eventual replacement, prioritizing more immediate needs could be crucial for a deeper playoff push next season. Many see Miller as a reach at No. 19, especially when other areas like edge rusher or secondary help could use reinforcement. Tight end Kenyon Sadiq is another name that could fit the bill in addressing those needs.

As the draft approaches, the Panthers will have to weigh their options carefully to ensure they make the most of their picks and continue building on last season's success.
