Cardinals fans will get their first real look at Carson Beck in an NFL uniform on Thursday night, but Jeremiyah Love will be staying on the sideline.
Coach Mike LaFleur said Wednesday that Love will not play against the Panthers in the Hall of Fame Game, taking the No. 3 pick out of Arizona’s preseason opener. The move comes shortly after the Cardinals put Tyler Allgeier atop their first training camp depth chart at running back.
The absence doesn’t appear to be tied to injury. Arizona is expected to hold out several key starters in the Hall of Fame Game, including quarterback Jacoby Brissett, and Love’s situation seems to fit that same plan. Even though the Cardinals have been careful not to label him a starter, keeping him out here may be the clearest hint yet that they see big things ahead for the rookie from Notre Dame.
LaFleur did not say who would open at running back Thursday night. If Allgeier is active while other starters rest, that could point toward Love being the team’s lead back when the season begins. If Allgeier also sits, it may mean Arizona views both backs as important enough to protect from a game that doesn’t count.
Love still has a chance to get on the field before the preseason ends. The Cardinals have not ruled him out of any other exhibition games, so this doesn’t close the door on seeing him in game action this summer.
The bigger picture in Arizona’s backfield still has a few moving parts. The team’s projected running back depth chart lists Love first, followed by Allgeier, then James Conner, Trey Benson, Zonovan Knight and Corey Kiner. Love and Allgeier could end up as the top two backs for the Cardinals this season, but Conner’s status remains something to watch.
Conner is back in Arizona after a severe ankle injury ended his season last September, yet he still hasn’t taken part in team drills. LaFleur addressed that Wednesday, saying, "James knows his body better than any of us, and we were hoping at this point we could get him out there, but he just needs a little bit more time,"
If Love and Allgeier are both held out Thursday, the Cardinals would likely turn to Benson, Knight and Kiner for work in the backfield.
