The Buccaneers’ trade deadline approach may come down to one game, and it’s a big one.
Tampa Bay enters Week 7 at 1-5 and gets a chance to reset things against the NFC South-leading Carolina Panthers. The Bucs are set to have Baker Mayfield back under center, but they’ll be without top wideout Emeka Egbuka, and the Panthers are rolling into the matchup with strong recent form. That combination has made Sunday a pivotal moment for a Tampa Bay team already skating on thin ice.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said the result could swing the organization’s thinking in a major way.
"Bucs still in NFC South hunt, but a loss Sunday would put them at 1-6," Fowler writes. "If that happens, some in league expect TB to entertain seller mode at that point."
A loss wouldn’t necessarily make the Buccaneers full-blown sellers, but it would almost certainly bury their division hopes and leave them far outside the playoff picture. At that point, the front office would have even more reason to look at players who are set to reach the open market after the 2026 NFL season.
There are also bigger names to monitor if the team decides to make moves. Chris Godwin and Vita Vea are both being mentioned as possible trade candidates, and each could draw meaningful return. Sean Tucker and Kenny Gainwell are also potential chips, especially with Bucky Irving established as the lead back and teams around the league still searching for running back help.
Plenty of other Buccaneers could be in play before November is over, but that all hinges on what happens against Carolina. Win, and Tampa Bay stays alive and could hold steady. Lose, and the sell-off could start as soon as next week.

Panthers Defense Has A New Strength Fans Didn't See Coming
The Panthers defensive turnaround has had a few visible touchstones this season, but the work at inside linebacker has quietly become one of the biggest reasons for the improvement. Bobby Okereke and Devin Lloyd have given Ejiro Everos group a steadier middle, and both have graded out among the top inside linebackers in coverage according to Pro Football Focus. That kind of reliability has mattered for a defense trying to tighten up against both the run and the pass.
Evero pointed to their football intelligence and playmaking ability during a recent teleconference, and it is easy to see why those traits fit what Carolina is building. Their impact has helped the Panthers limit opponents rushing yards and points per game, giving the defense a more complete identity than it had earlier in the season. The challenge now is keeping that level of play from the middle of the field where so much of the defenses success has started. [Read more 🡒]
Panthers Secondary Could Get A Huge Boost At The Right Time
The Panthers could use a lift in the secondary at just the right time, and Dave Canales offered a more encouraging update on the situation ahead of Week 7. Starting defensive backs Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson are both recovering, and the early signs suggest each is moving in the right direction after Carolina has already gone two games without them.
Horn is eager to keep progressing in his recovery, while Jackson is starting to regain the speed and change-of-direction ability that matter so much on the back end. The Panthers may be close to opening their practice window for both players in the coming weeks, which would give the defense a much-needed chance to get closer to full strength. [Read more 🡒]
Panthers Defense Faces Its Real NFC South Test This Week
The Panthers have spent the past few weeks building some real momentum on defense, and this weeks preparation suddenly looks a little different. Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles said Baker Mayfield is likely to play after missing the last three games with a thumb injury, even though he remains officially questionable, which means Carolina is getting ready for a more proven quarterback than the rookie it had been anticipating.
For a Panthers unit that has shown signs of tightening up, Mayfields return raises the degree of difficulty but doesnt completely alter the bigger picture. The matchup still gives Carolina a chance to measure how far its defensive progress has come, only now the test comes against a familiar NFC South rival with a healthier lineup and a little more uncertainty attached to it.
