Injuries have already reshaped the Carolina Panthers’ camp, and one of the clearest ripple effects may show up at wide receiver.
With the Panthers battered at premium spots - both starting offensive tackles sidelined indefinitely, their second-best edge rusher gone for the year, a key receiver injured and even their third-string quarterback out after a strong Hall of Fame Game showing - opportunities are opening for players lower on the depth chart. That includes free-agent addition John Metchie III, who turned heads with a solid preseason debut.
Pro Football Focus now sees Metchie as a real challenger for the No. 3 receiver job, a spot that was expected to belong to either Xavier Legette or David Moore. In PFF’s 2026 Panthers preview, analyst Gordon McGuinness pointed to the situation around Legette, Brazzell and Metchie this way:
"Through two NFL seasons, Legette has been outproduced by Jalen Coker, who went undrafted in the same class, and [Chris] Brazzell was set to provide another challenger for playing time. An early training camp injury is expected to cost Brazzell his rookie season, however, shifting the focus to whether John Metchie can push Legette for a starting role. Metchie has shown occasional flashes through his first three NFL seasons, but his career average of 1.03 yards per route run suggests he presents a less significant threat to Legette's role than Brazzell might have."
PFF also made clear it would not hand the job to Moore simply because of his practice reputation, and said Legette would need to look like a different player in camp and back it up in the preseason to earn the role.
Metchie does bring a built-in connection with Bryce Young. The two played together at Alabama in 2021, when Young won the Heisman Trophy and Metchie finished with 96 catches for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns.
With the injuries already thinning the roster, this could become the most interesting battle in Panthers camp over the final stretch of the preseason.

Before the Panthers even took the field for their first preseason game, their unofficial depth chart offered a few early hints about how the roster battles are shaping up. Trevin Wallace is positioned ahead of Claudin Cherelus at the second linebacker spot opposite Devin Lloyd, Jimmy Horn is listed over John Metchie, and Cam Jackson appears set to start on the defensive line, all of which gives the coaching staffs early pecking order a little more clarity.
The chart also added more pressure to an already crowded tight end group, especially after Carolina signed Darren Waller following the release. Ja'Tavion Sanders has slid behind other players in the competition and is no longer sitting in a comfortable spot, which means the next stretch of camp work and preseason snaps could carry a lot more weight than usual for anyone trying to stick on the final roster. Panthers Receiver Battle Just Put A Surprising Roster Hope On Edge
With Xavier Legette, Jalen Coker and Tetairoa McMillan already looking secure, the Panthers receiver room has turned into a fight for whatever comes after the obvious names. That leaves a cluster of camp standouts trying to make the best possible case over the rest of the preseason, with Jimmy Horn Jr. and John Metchie among the players working to stick on the final group.
Horn has shown enough in camp to keep his name in the conversation, which is part of why the roster picture has gotten tricky.
