The Panthers are making two running back moves for Week 6, with Dave Canales saying Trevor Etienne will come off injured reserve and Anthony Tyus III is being bumped up from the practice squad to the active roster, according to Alex Zietlow.
Tyus is stepping in for AJ Dillon, who is expected to be ruled out for Sunday’s game.
Etienne, 22, came to Georgia after his first two college seasons at Florida and made the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2022. Carolina selected him with the No. 114 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, then signed him to a four-year, $5,208,744 contract that included a $1,008,744 signing bonus.
In 2025, Etienne played in all 17 games for the Panthers and finished with 20 carries for 94 yards, plus three receptions for 13 yards.
Tyus, 23, arrived at the college level as a three-star recruit and the 52nd-ranked running back in the 2021 class out of Portage, Michigan. He originally committed to Northwestern, later transferred to Ohio University for his final season, and picked up All-MAC second-team honors there.
After the 2025 draft, he signed with the Lions as an undrafted free agent but was waived before camp and spent time with the Seahawks. Tyus then landed on Carolina’s practice squad in October, re-signed there after final roster cuts this year, and was released from the practice squad earlier this week before getting another call from the Panthers.
In 2026, Tyus has played in two games for Carolina and brought back five kickoffs for 127 yards.

Panthers Face A Trade Deadline Decision On Familiar Roster Names
As the NFL trade deadline draws closer, the Panthers are weighing the kind of roster decision that can say as much about a season as any result on the field. Carolina has not tipped its hand on whether it plans to buy, sell, or simply hold steady, and that uncertainty has put a handful of familiar names into the conversation as possible trade candidates.
Rasheed Walker, Luke Fortner, John Metchie III, AJ Dillon and Ja'Tavion Sanders all fit into that broader evaluation in different ways, whether because of performance, contract status or the way their roles intersect with team needs. Nothing has been confirmed, and this remains a speculative exercise for now, but it is the sort of deadline chatter that can quickly turn into real movement if the Panthers decide to reshape parts of the roster. Panthers Suddenly Face A Trade Deadline Decision That Could Define This Start
The Panthers have spent the first part of this season looking like a team with real offensive firepower, but the deeper issues around them are starting to show up in the places that usually decide how far a good start can go. Injuries at wide receiver have thinned out the options, and the offensive line and defense both still have spots that could use help if Carolina wants to keep pace as the schedule gets tougher.
So the trade deadline has become a live conversation in the building, and not just for depth. Carolina could use a proven receiver like Jerry Jeudy, help inside with Landon Dickerson, more pressure off the edge from Josh Sweat or Josh Uche, another linebacker in Willie Gay Jr., or even a corner like Donte Jackson, depending on how the market breaks. The problem is that every one of those fixes comes with its own cost, and the Panthers now have to decide how aggressive they want to be before the seasons early promise starts to get tested. Michael Penix Jr Just Sent Falcons Fans An Encouraging Signal
Michael Penix Jr. was back on the practice field after a ribs injury, and the Falcons quarterback said he feels ready for Week 6, a promising sign for Atlanta as it tries to steady its offense. For Carolina, it is a familiar kind of checkpoint in the NFC South, where every bit of quarterback news can ripple through a division race and alter how a defense prepares for the next meeting.
Ejiro Evero also spent time addressing one of his own defenders, pointing to Akayleb Evans Week 4 performance and noting the areas that still need cleaning up while expressing confidence the cornerback can correct his mistakes. It is the sort of midseason evaluation that matters in Carolina, especially with divisional games and weekly adjustments piling up, and it comes as New Orleans is dealing with its own issues after owner Gayle Benson publicly voiced disappointment over the Saints 1-4 start and called for accountability throughout the organization.
