The Carolina Panthers didn’t wait long after Sunday’s disaster in Chicago to make a change.
Just two days after a muffed punt helped swing momentum in the Bears’ 59-37 win, the Panthers waived wide receiver Jimmy Horn Jr., according to Jonathan Jones of The Athletic. Horn’s mistake came in the second quarter with the game tied 21-21, right after Carolina had forced a Chicago punt. Instead of getting a clean possession, the Panthers gave the ball right back on the muff, and the Bears cashed it in with a field goal.
"The Panthers waived wide receiver Jimmy Horn Jr.," Jones reported.
Horn’s release comes after a quiet start to the 2026 NFL season. He didn’t log a reception or a rushing attempt in Week 1, and the special teams blunder ended up being the kind of miscue a depth receiver can’t afford.
A former Colorado Buffaloes receiver, Horn was selected by Carolina in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He’s now headed to the open market a little over a year after arriving in the league.
His rookie year with the Panthers included eight carries for 69 yards and 11 catches on 15 targets for 108 yards, though he didn’t score a touchdown.
With Horn gone, Carolina’s receiver group now includes Tetairoa McMillan, Jalen Coker, Xavier Legette, Brycen Tremayne, and John Metchie III. It’s a group that leaves the Panthers with enough options that moving on from Horn after Sunday’s mistake doesn’t register as a major shock.
