The Carolina Panthers are gearing up for the 2026 offseason with an eye on creating some cap space. One of their strategies involves potentially parting ways with defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson, either through a trade or release.
Robinson, a key figure in Carolina’s defense over the past two years, has been granted permission to seek a trade. If a deal doesn't materialize, the Panthers might release him, freeing up a significant $10.5 million in cap space. This move, while financially strategic, also reflects the crowded nature of Carolina’s defensive line, especially after signing Tershawn Wharton to a hefty three-year, $54 million contract last year.
Robinson, who turns 31 soon, has been a standout performer. In 2024, he tied for the team lead with 5.5 sacks and ranked among the top 10 defensive linemen in run stops last season. His consistent performance has been a boon for the Panthers, with career-highs of 80 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 2024, marking his ninth year in the league.
Durability is one of Robinson’s hallmarks. Missing just one game in two years with the Panthers, he’s been a reliable presence on the field, playing at least 16 games in four of the last five seasons. As the Panthers navigate this offseason, Robinson’s future remains a pivotal piece of their cap strategy puzzle.
