The Falcons may be heading into Week 2 without one of the most important pieces of their offensive line.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski said Monday that right guard Chris Lindstrom has entered the concussion protocol after Atlanta’s 20-13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. His availability for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers will hinge on how he moves through the protocol over the course of the week.
Lindstrom was on the field for 51 offensive snaps against Pittsburgh before exiting. Kyle Hinton finished the game at right guard, handling the final nine offensive snaps there.
That’s a significant development for an Atlanta offense that already had trouble finding any rhythm in its opener. The Falcons were leaning on Cooper Rush, who made his first start for the team and had a rough afternoon trying to push the ball downfield while Pittsburgh’s pass rush kept pressure on Atlanta.
Even so, Bijan Robinson gave Atlanta one of its bright spots. He ran for 173 yards and a touchdown in the loss, but the Falcons clearly need more balance on offense going forward.
That’s why Lindstrom’s situation matters so much. He’s more than just another starter; he’s long been one of the league’s best interior linemen and a central part of what Atlanta wants to be up front.
If he can’t clear the concussion protocol, Hinton would be the next man up in the starting lineup against Carolina. Hinton is in his fourth year with the Falcons and started two games last season, so the team at least has a familiar option if it needs one. Atlanta will use the practice week to decide whether Hinton is the answer or if the line needs another tweak.
The timing gets even trickier because the quarterback picture is unsettled, too. Stefanski didn’t name a Week 2 starter Monday, with Michael Penix Jr., Tua Tagovailoa and Rush all dealing with circumstances that have complicated the position.
No matter who ends up taking snaps, the assignment is simple: keep the quarterback upright.
Atlanta already has plenty to clean up after Week 1, and losing Lindstrom for any stretch would only add to the burden. For now, the Falcons are waiting on his progress, and his status is shaping up to be one of the key injury stories of the week before Sunday’s matchup with Carolina.
