Cooper Rush’s second start for Atlanta could hardly have gone worse.
The Falcons opened their Week 2 meeting with the Carolina Panthers by getting burned twice on their first two offensive possessions, and both empty trips came after Rush turnovers. Atlanta’s home crowd at Mercedes-Benz Stadium made its frustration loud and clear, with boos rolling through the building and bleeding into the FOX broadcast.
The first drive began with a flash of athleticism from Rush, who ripped off a nine-yard run on the opening play of the NFC South home opener. That momentum disappeared quickly. On the next snap, Panthers safety Nick Scott came away with the ball and Carolina turned the takeaway into points, piecing together a 35-yard drive capped by a three-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Young to Chuba Hubbard for a 7-0 lead.
Atlanta’s offense never settled in after that. Its second possession lasted four plays and covered 19 yards before Rush tried to fit a throw into coverage to Bijan Robinson. Devin Lloyd got a hand on it, Bobby Okereke finished the job with the interception, and the Falcons were right back under siege.
The noise in the stadium only grew from there. Rush’s rough start has become the latest ugly turn in Atlanta’s quarterback mess, and Sunday only sharpened the pressure around him.
That pressure has been building since Week 1, when Rush went 12-for-22 for 143 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in the Falcons’ 20-13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. One of those picks was returned for a touchdown by TJ Watt. Even after that performance, Rush wasn’t sure earlier in the week whether he’d be the guy again on Sunday.
If Atlanta does decide to make a change during the game, the options behind him are thin. The team would have to turn to undrafted rookie Jack Strand or emergency third-stringer Olamide Zaccheaus, who is a wide receiver.
There may be a bigger change coming soon, though. ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport reported that Michael Penix Jr. could be available for the Falcons’ Thursday Night Football matchup against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. Penix is working back from a partially torn ACL and has been medically cleared since August, but reports say he is not yet ready to play until Thursday.
Tua Tagovailoa could also return and serve as Penix’s backup in Green Bay after being named the Week 1 starter before suffering an oblique injury midweek.
Through one quarter, Rush was 3-of-5 for 31 yards with an interception and a lost fumble, and Carolina had already built a 10-0 lead.
