Eagles Stun Fans by Adding Veteran QB Andy Dalton

Eagles bolster their quarterback lineup by trading for veteran Andy Dalton, as Panthers look to revamp their backup strategy.

In a move that could bolster their quarterback depth, the Eagles have struck a deal with the Panthers to bring veteran QB Andy Dalton to Philadelphia. The trade, which sends a 2027 seventh-round pick to Carolina, reflects the Panthers' desire to inject youth into their backup quarterback position this offseason.

With the signing of Kenny Pickett, Carolina's intentions to move on from Dalton became clear. Instead of releasing him, the Panthers managed to secure a draft pick, a savvy piece of business that benefits both teams.

For the Eagles, Dalton's arrival provides experienced depth behind their current roster, which includes Tanner McKee. McKee, last season’s backup, has been swirling in trade rumors, making Dalton's presence even more significant for Philadelphia's plans.

Dalton, now 38, has had a journeyman career since being drafted by the Bengals in the second round back in 2011. His career has seen him sign a series of contracts, including a substantial seven-year, $97.09 million deal with Cincinnati. After his release, Dalton had stints with the Cowboys, Bears, Saints, and most recently, the Panthers.

Last season, Dalton made appearances in four games for Carolina, including one start. He completed 67.6 percent of his passes, throwing for 293 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. His wealth of experience and steady hand could prove invaluable for the Eagles as they prepare for the upcoming season.

This trade not only addresses the Eagles' need for a seasoned backup but also allows the Panthers to continue their focus on developing younger talent at the quarterback position.
