Devin Lloyd, the Carolina Panthers’ latest inside linebacker acquisition, is proving to be unshakeable amidst the usual buzz surrounding a high-profile NFL signing. When asked about the Jaguars’ decision not to pick up his fifth-year option before the 2025 season, Lloyd’s response was all about focus and resilience.
His mantra? Attack each day, regardless of the noise.
What did catch him off guard, though, was the linebacker market this offseason. Lloyd inked a three-year deal worth up to $41.9 million, aligning him with the likes of Patrick Queen and Quay Walker.
Given his versatility, Lloyd expected a bit more from the market. “It was surprising,” he admitted.
“But that’s just how the market went this year.”
Lloyd’s surprise is understandable when you consider his stellar 2025 season with the Jaguars. His stats were nothing short of impressive.
He defended seven passes, snagged a position-best five interceptions-one of which he returned 99 yards for a touchdown-and racked up 87 tackles, two fumble recoveries, 1.5 sacks, and a career-high 10 QB hits over 16 games. His performance earned him the third-best defensive grade among linebackers, trailing only Fred Warner and Jack Campbell.
2025 was Lloyd’s breakout year, earning him his first Pro Bowl selection. Despite the Jaguars’ offer to retain him, it wasn’t enough to prevent him from exploring free agency. Jacksonville chose not to franchise-tag him, a move that would have made him the highest-paid inside linebacker by a significant margin.
Reflecting on the season, Lloyd attributes much of his success to the coaching he received. Under the guidance of defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile and linebackers coach Tem Lukabu, Lloyd honed his technique, particularly in using his hands to play more physically and effectively in the run game.
As Lloyd transitions to the Panthers, fans will get to know more about his disciplined upbringing, thanks to his parents’ 40 years of combined service in the Navy. This discipline translates into his relentless work ethic, both on and off the field.
Lloyd is enthusiastic about his future in Charlotte, especially with the Panthers’ active free agency moves. Alongside Lloyd, the team added standout pass rusher Jaelan Phillips and bolstered their offensive line, setting the stage for a promising season.
While the free agency process held its surprises, Lloyd remains confident in the Panthers’ potential. “We’re just an ascending team,” he noted, drawing parallels to his former team’s rise. With the playoffs in sight, Lloyd is ready to help the Panthers take that next crucial step.
