Dave Canales didn’t sugarcoat it after the Carolina Panthers’ Week 1 collapse against the Chicago Bears. The Panthers were in a back-and-forth fight for much of Sunday, but once the game tilted, it tilted hard - and their head coach pointed straight at inconsistency on defense.
For a half, the matchup looked like a high-scoring duel between two teams coming off division titles. The teams traded touchdowns, and Carolina pulled even at 31 on Chuba Hubbard’s touchdown run.
From there, though, Chicago took over and rolled to a 59-37 win after outscoring the Panthers 28-6 the rest of the way. The Bears piled up more than 552 total yards and set a new mark by scoring 59 points.
Caleb Williams led the way for Chicago with four total touchdowns, while the ground game kept hammering away. D’Andre Swift ran for 124 yards and three scores, and Kyle Monangai added 100 yards and a touchdown. Carolina never found an answer for Ben Johnson’s offense.
That left Canales searching for a sharper response from his team.
"Absolutely. (We) can't be streaky like that.
Got to be consistent," Canales said after the game. "That's what we've been talking about.
We'll get back to that and look at some of the things on film and make sure that we're down-in and down-out ready to go."
The issue, in Canales’ view, wasn’t some wild schematic surprise from Chicago. He said the Panthers saw enough on film to know what was coming, and the problem came down to execution.
"It was execution. There was a couple little wrinkles, but most of the stuff fit within what they've done," Canales said.
"They've done a lot in the last year or so. We had a ton of film to be able to watch and look at.
Started off with the run game, and certainly on our side, on the offensive side, we didn't get the run game going either. We took advantage of turnover on downs to turn that into points.
They had a fumble as well, so we were able to capitalize on some of those things, but it was certainly a collective group. That starts with me."
The Panthers need more than one phase to hold up if they want to avoid more days like this. By the nine-minute mark of the third quarter, Carolina had started to fade, and the game got away from them in a hurry. What happened in Week 1 raised some early alarms in Charlotte, and if those issues linger, the season could go sideways fast.
