Carolina Panthers Linked to Bold Move That Could Transform Their Defense

The Panthers may be eyeing a veteran defensive star to spark their struggling pass rush and add leadership to a young unit.

The Carolina Panthers are in search of answers on defense-and they might be eyeing one of the most decorated edge rushers of the past decade to help solve their pass-rushing problem.

After finishing the 2025 season with just 30 sacks-down from 32 the year before-Carolina finds itself once again staring at a glaring hole in its front seven. The team tried to address the issue last offseason by signing Pat Jones II and drafting edge rushers Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen.

But the results didn’t follow. The pressure didn’t get home nearly enough, and the defense struggled to consistently disrupt opposing quarterbacks.

Now, with free agency on the horizon, the Panthers are being linked to a big name: Khalil Mack.

Yes, that Khalil Mack-the former Defensive Player of the Year, nine-time Pro Bowler, and three-time First-Team All-Pro. While some believe Mack is more likely to reunite with the Chicago Bears, Carolina has emerged as a potential landing spot for the veteran edge rusher.

At 34, Mack may not be the same force of nature who terrorized quarterbacks in his prime, but he’s still capable of making an impact-especially for a team that desperately needs help setting the edge. In 2025, he posted 32 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 12 games for the Los Angeles Chargers. Modest numbers compared to his peak, but not insignificant considering his role and usage.

And it's worth remembering: it wasn’t that long ago-just three seasons back in 2023-that Mack notched a career-high 17 sacks. That kind of production doesn’t just vanish overnight. Even if he's no longer an every-down wrecking ball, Mack remains a savvy, physical presence who can still get to the quarterback and hold up well against the run.

That last part is key for Carolina. This isn’t just about sacks-it’s about setting a tone. Mack’s ability to anchor the edge and take on blockers would give the Panthers a much-needed boost in run defense, an area where they’ve also struggled in recent seasons.

But beyond the stats and tape, Mack brings something else to the table: leadership. This is a player who’s been through the wars, played under pressure, and commanded respect in multiple locker rooms. For a young Panthers defense still finding its identity, having a veteran voice like Mack’s could be invaluable.

The question, of course, is mutual interest. Would Mack see Carolina as a place where he can compete, contribute, and close out his career on a high note?

That’s the unknown. But if the Panthers are serious about revamping their pass rush and adding proven experience, Mack is a name that makes a lot of sense.

For now, it’s just a potential fit-but it’s one worth watching as free agency approaches.
